What a low CRI actually does to a room

You do not see CRI; you see its consequences. Under a CRI 70 fitting, walnut veneer loses its red and goes flat brown. A warm beige laminate turns grey. Statuario marble, bought for the grey vein against a warm white ground, reads as uniformly cold. Skin looks tired in every photograph taken in the room. Clients usually describe this as “the colour came out wrong” and blame the paint.

R9: the number under the number

General CRI is an average of eight pastel test colours, none of them saturated red. A fitting can score Ra 90 and still render deep reds badly, which is why the R9 value is quoted separately by serious manufacturers. R9 above 50 is the practical threshold for a home. It is what makes timber, terracotta, brick and skin look correct, and it is the first thing a budget high-CRI claim quietly drops.

Where to spend and where not to

  • Spend on: dressing areas, walk-in closets, bathroom mirrors, kitchens, and any wall carrying art or stone.
  • Do not bother in: utility, storerooms, service passages, lofts.
  • In retail and hospitality, CRI 90 with R9 > 50 is not optional — it is what makes merchandise and food look edible.
  • Keep CRI consistent within a room; a CRI 90 downlight beside a CRI 75 strip is visibly mismatched.

CRI works together with colour temperature: Kelvin sets the tint of the white, CRI decides whether everything the white lands on looks right. Both belong on the lighting schedule, along with lumens and beam angle. See the lighting colour guide, or talk to us about a scheme through luxury interior design.

Frequently asked questions

Is CRI 80 good enough for a home?+

For passages and utility, yes. For any room where you have spent money on veneer, stone, fabric or paint colour, no — CRI 90 with a decent R9 is the minimum that shows what you bought. The premium across a 2BHK is usually ₹12,000–25,000.

What is the difference between CRI and R9?+

CRI (Ra) averages eight pastel test samples. R9 is a ninth, saturated red sample that Ra excludes. A fitting can hit Ra 90 with R9 near zero and still make timber and skin look dead, so ask for both figures.

Does high CRI reduce brightness?+

Slightly. Achieving high fidelity costs efficacy, so a CRI 95 fitting usually delivers 10–20% fewer lumens per watt than a CRI 80 equivalent. Allow for that in the fitting count rather than dropping the CRI.

Do LED strips have a CRI rating?+

They do, and it varies more than downlights. Budget strips are often CRI 70–75, which shows badly when the light washes a painted or veneered surface at a grazing angle. For cove and profile runs, specify CRI 90.
