How this calculator works

  1. Front elevation = width × height, both in feet. An 8 × 7 wardrobe is 56 sq ft of face.
  2. Body cost = face × ₹1,450 × carcass × finish × shutter type × hardware. The ₹1,450 base covers the carcass, plain laminate shutters, plinth, back panel, one hanging rod and three shelves.
  3. Carcass factor: HDHMR ×1.0, BWP plywood ×1.08, WPC or marine ply ×1.12.
  4. Shutter finish factor: laminate ×1.0, membrane ×1.08, acrylic ×1.34, veneer with PU ×1.47, high-gloss PU ×1.56 — the same ladder the material cost comparison tool prices finish by finish.
  5. Shutter type factor: openable ×1.0, sliding ×1.10, sliding with mirror ×1.15.
  6. Hardware factor: standard Indian ×1.0, Hettich or Ebco ×1.04, Hafele or Blum ×1.09.
  7. Internals are added flat: ₹0 basic, ₹9,500 standard, ₹26,000 premium.
  8. Loft = width × 2 ft × ₹1,400 where selected.
  9. City factor multiplies the whole total, and the displayed range is −8% to +10%.

Worked example: the calculator defaults

  1. Face area = 8 ft × 7 ft = 56 sq ft
  2. Body = 56 × ₹1,450 = ₹81,200; × 1.08 BWP = ₹87,696; × 1.0 laminate; × 1.0 openable; × 1.04 Hettich = ₹91,204
  3. Standard internals = ₹9,500
  4. Loft = 8 ft × 2 ft × ₹1,400 = ₹22,400
  5. Subtotal = ₹1,23,104; × 1.15 Mumbai = ₹1,41,569
  6. Displayed range = ₹1.30 L – ₹1.56 L, or ₹1,873 per sq ft of shutter elevation before internals and the loft — inside the audited laminate band of ₹1,550–₹2,350.

Where wardrobe quotations usually differ

  • Carcass grade in the plinth and back. Some quotes specify BWP for the visible carcass and 6 mm MDF for the back panel. In a Mumbai bedroom sharing a wall with a bathroom, that back panel is the first thing to swell.
  • Shutter thickness. 18 mm shutters are standard; 16 mm sliding shutters flex and rattle in the track within two years.
  • Edge banding. 0.8 mm PVC edge banding is the minimum on a wardrobe; 0.45 mm is quoted to save money and lifts at the corners.
  • Hanging height. A single rod at 6 ft wastes the bottom third of the bay. Two rods at 1,050 mm each need 7 ft of usable internal height — check yours before assuming double hang is possible.
  • Loft access. Loft shutters above 7 ft need lift-up or bi-fold hardware to be usable. Plain hinged loft shutters at that height swing into your face.

The wardrobe is the one piece of joinery a client opens twice a day for fifteen years. Spend on the carcass and the hinges, not on the shutter colour.

What this estimate excludes

  • 18% GST, shown separately in the breakdown
  • Wall levelling, plastering or waterproofing behind the wardrobe
  • Electrical points, wardrobe lighting and sensor strips
  • Dressing tables, study units and bedside joinery quoted as separate items
  • Mirror panels beyond the sliding-mirror shutter option
  • Dismantling and disposal of an existing wardrobe

The bands behind this page are the ones Greenbox has actually billed for full-height wardrobes, measured per sq ft of shutter elevation and held at October 2026: ₹1,550–₹2,350 in laminate, ₹2,450–₹3,700 in veneer and the luxury finishes, and ₹1,550–₹2,350 for a laminate loft over the top. The multipliers above are set so the body rate lands inside them, and they have been checked line for line against the material cost comparison tool. It is still an indicative estimate, not a quotation — the real figure depends on your drawings, site condition and the brands you finally specify.

Openable or sliding — a room decision, not a taste one

Sliding costs 10% more and gives you back the 2 ft of floor a hinged shutter needs to swing. In a bedroom 10 ft wide or less, where the bed sits within reach of the wardrobe, that clearance is the whole argument and the premium is worth paying. In a bedroom of 12 ft or more, hinged wins on every other measure: you see the entire wardrobe at once, the shutters cost less, and there is no track to collect dust and jam in a Mumbai monsoon.

Two practical notes. A sliding wardrobe needs 650 mm of carcass depth rather than 600, because the track takes 50 mm off the usable interior — so a 10 ft sliding wardrobe holds slightly less than a 10 ft hinged one despite costing more. And sliding shutters only ever expose half the opening, which means the bay behind a closed shutter is the bay you stop using. Plan the drawer bank and the everyday-shirt bay behind the leaf that is normally open.

Reading a wardrobe quotation line by line

  1. Is the rate on front elevation or on carcass area? Front elevation is standard. A rate quoted on developed area — every internal shelf and partition counted as a surface — will look lower per sq ft and total higher.
  2. Is the loft priced separately? It should be, on its own face area. A quote that folds the loft into the main rate is hiding either a cheap loft or an expensive wardrobe.
  3. What is the back panel? Ask for the thickness and the material by name. Six millimetre MDF behind a BWP carcass is the most common quiet downgrade.
  4. Are hinges branded and counted? Soft-close hinges at four per shutter on a five-shutter wardrobe is twenty hinges. At Hafele prices that is a real line, not a rounding error.
  5. Who makes good the wall? Levelling, minor plaster repair and the scribe fillet at an out-of-plumb wall are either in the quote or they become a variation on site.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a built-in wardrobe cost in India?+

Between ₹1,670 and ₹3,650 per sq ft of shutter elevation in Mumbai, depending on carcass and finish. A standard 8 ft × 7 ft BWP laminate wardrobe with a loft costs about ₹1.3–1.56 lakh ex-GST; the same wardrobe in acrylic with Hafele hardware is ₹1.69–2.02 lakh.

Is a sliding wardrobe more expensive than hinged?+

Yes, about 10% more. Sliding needs a top and bottom track, heavier rollers, thicker shutter frames and tighter fabrication tolerances. It buys you clearance in front of the wardrobe, which matters in a bedroom under 10 ft wide — but you only ever see half the wardrobe at a time.

Which carcass material should I choose?+

BWP plywood in Mumbai, without much debate. It adds roughly 8% to the body cost and is the only component you cannot upgrade later without dismantling the unit. HDHMR is acceptable in dry inland cities. Avoid particle board entirely in any bedroom sharing a wall with a bathroom.

Does the calculator include a loft?+

It does when you select it — the loft is charged on its own face area of width × 2 ft at ₹1,400 per sq ft. Lofts are cheaper per sq ft than the main wardrobe because there are no drawers, rods or internal partitions behind the shutter.

How accurate is this wardrobe estimate?+

Typically within 10% of our own quotation for a straightforward wall-to-wall wardrobe. It gets less accurate where the wall is out of plumb, where a beam or duct cuts into the opening, or where the wardrobe wraps a corner — all three add fabrication time rather than material.
