Designing for a small Mumbai kitchen
A 6×8 ft kitchen is not a smaller version of a large one — it needs different decisions. These are the moves that consistently recover usable space:
- Go full height. Wall units to the ceiling with a loft above; the top shelf holds the things you use twice a year.
- Work the corner. A magic corner or carousel turns the single most wasted cubic foot in the kitchen into usable storage.
- Tall unit over multiple small ones. One tall unit for groceries beats three scattered cupboards.
- Drawers, not shutters, below the counter. Pull-out drawers make the back of a deep base unit reachable; a shuttered cupboard does not.
- Move the fridge out if the kitchen is under 50 sq ft. It is the biggest single object and it rarely earns its footprint inside a small kitchen.
In a 6×8 kitchen, every dead corner is about 4% of your storage. There are usually three of them.

Why humidity changes the specification
Mumbai's coastal air is the reason we do not quote MR-grade ply for kitchens at any price point. Under the sink, behind the hob and along any external wall, moisture is constant. BWP plywood at ₹120–175 per sq ft or WPC at ₹150–200 costs more up front and is the difference between joinery that lasts ten years and joinery that swells in three.
Our old kitchen had swollen under the sink within two years. Greenbox specified BWP throughout and explained exactly why. Three years on, no issues.
They found storage I did not know a 7x9 kitchen could hold. The magic corner alone was worth it.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a modular kitchen cost in Mumbai?+
₹1.8–2.8 lakh for a small 6×7 ft kitchen in laminate, ₹3.5–5 lakh for a standard 8×10 ft kitchen, and ₹6–9 lakh for the same kitchen in acrylic or PU with premium hardware. All figures exclude 18% GST and appliances.
Which carcass material should I use in Mumbai?+
BWP (boiling-water-proof) plywood, at roughly ₹120–175 per sq ft, or WPC at ₹150–200. Mumbai's coastal humidity makes MR-grade plywood and particle board a false economy — they typically swell and delaminate within two to four years in a kitchen.
What is the best layout for a small Mumbai kitchen?+
L-shaped for most flats, or parallel (galley) where the room is long and narrow. Both keep a workable triangle in a small footprint. Straight-line layouts suit kitchens under 7 ft of run, and island kitchens need at least 12×12 ft, which is rare in Mumbai.
How long does installation take, and will my society allow it?+
On-site installation is three to five days after two to three weeks of factory fabrication. Most Mumbai societies permit this within standard working hours; we book the service lift in advance for panel delivery and handle the NOC and worker lists as part of the project.
Do you replace only the kitchen, or is it part of a full home project?+
Either. We regularly do standalone kitchen replacements, including removing the existing kitchen and making good the walls and plumbing. It is also the most commonly upgraded element within a full home interior project.
