What is a walk-in closet?

A room you dress in rather than a cupboard you open — and the space arithmetic that decides whether a flat can have one.

The dimensions that make it work

Clear internal dimensions; allow 900 mm circulation and 600 mm of depth per side
LayoutMinimum internal sizeHanging capacity
Single-sided, corridor1.65 m × 2.4 m2.4 m of rail
Double-sided, parallel2.1 m × 2.7 m5.4 m of rail
U-shaped2.4 m × 2.7 m7 m of rail plus drawers
With a central island3.0 m × 3.3 m7 m plus island storage

Below 1.65 m of width there is not enough room to stand and pull a drawer at the same time — at that point a well-planned fitted wardrobe does the same job in less area.

What it costs to fit out

Open joinery is cheaper per square foot than shuttered wardrobes — there are no doors, no hinges and no sliding track — but a walk-in uses far more of it, and the fittings are usually better: soft-close drawers, pull-out trouser racks, glazed display fronts, a jewellery drawer with a lock. A realistic Mumbai figure is ₹2.4 lakh for a simple single-sided fit-out and ₹5–7 lakh for a U-shaped dressing room with glass fronts, island and lighting.

Lighting is half the experience

  • Aim for 300–500 lux at face height in front of the mirror, lit from the front, never only from above.
  • CRI 90 with R9 above 50 — this is the one room where colour accuracy genuinely changes decisions.
  • Profile lights under each shelf on a PIR sensor.
  • 3000K throughout, so clothes read as they will in a warmly lit room.

Is it worth the floor area?

In a Mumbai flat, a walk-in costs you a room. Converting a 70 sq ft third bedroom into a dressing room in a building where carpet area sells at ₹28,000–55,000 per sq ft is a ₹20 lakh-plus decision in asset terms, even though the joinery is ₹3 lakh. In a 4BHK with space to spare it is a luxury worth having; in a 2BHK, a well-planned sliding wardrobe with proper internals does most of the job. See luxury interiors and wardrobe internals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum size for a walk-in closet?+

About 1.65 m × 2.4 m for a single-sided layout — 600 mm of storage depth plus 1,050 mm to stand and open a drawer. Anything narrower becomes a cupboard you have to stand outside, which defeats the point.

Should a walk-in closet have doors on the storage?+

Open shelving is faster to use and cheaper, but in Mumbai it collects dust and everything is always on display. Glazed fronts on hanging sections and open shelves for folded items is the combination most clients settle on.

Does a walk-in closet need ventilation?+

Yes. A sealed dressing room in Mumbai humidity is where mildew starts. Provide a ventilator or a small exhaust fan, keep a gap under the door, and do not put a closet on an external wall that carries monsoon damp without checking it first.

Can a bedroom be converted into a walk-in closet?+

Structurally, easily — it is joinery, not civil work. The question is whether the flat can afford the room. If the bedroom is under 70 sq ft it usually makes a better dressing room than a bedroom; above that, think carefully about resale.
