Reading a laminate specification
Three numbers describe it: thickness, finish and grade. Thickness of 0.8 mm suits internal shutters and shelving; 1 mm is worth the extra on kitchen fronts and anything a child will open ten times a day. Finish is where the visual decision lives — suede and matte hide fingerprints and scratches, gloss shows both, and textured “synchronised” laminates register the emboss to the printed grain so the surface feels like the wood it depicts.
| Type | Sheet price (8 × 4 ft) | Per sq ft | Where used |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.8 mm interior, plain | ₹850–1,400 | ₹27–44 | Wardrobe internals, shelving |
| 1 mm interior, decorative | ₹1,300–2,200 | ₹41–69 | Kitchen and wardrobe shutters |
| 1 mm textured / synchronised | ₹1,900–2,600 | ₹59–81 | Feature shutters, wall panelling |
| Anti-fingerprint matte | ₹2,100–3,200 | ₹66–100 | Dark kitchen fronts |
| 0.5–0.6 mm balancing / liner | ₹450–750 | ₹14–23 | Reverse face of every shutter |
Why the back face matters
A shutter laminated on one face only will bow, because the two sides absorb moisture at different rates. The reverse always takes a balancing laminate — cheaper and plain, but present. If a quotation lists shutters without a liner laminate, that is a real omission, not a saving.
Laminate, acrylic or veneer?
Acrylic is a cast sheet with depth and a mirror-flat face; it costs three to four times as much and scratches more visibly. Veneer is real timber, needs polishing on site, and no two panels match. Laminate is printed, consistent, tough and repairable only by replacement. For a Mumbai kitchen used hard for ten years, 1 mm matte laminate on BWP ply is still the most sensible default.
Laminate is applied at ₹45–90 per sq ft of labour over the sheet cost, which is why finished shutter rates sit well above the sheet price. Compare the options on our finish selection guide, or see modular kitchen design for the full build-up.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1 mm laminate better than 0.8 mm?+
On anything handled daily, yes. The extra thickness resists impact chipping at edges and holds the emboss better. On the inside of a wardrobe where nothing but a shirt touches it, 0.8 mm is fine and the saving is real.
Can laminate be repaired if it chips?+
Not properly. A chip can be filled and tinted, but it will always show. The repair is to replace the shutter face, which is why keeping two spare sheets of the same batch at handover is worth the storage space.
Does laminate peel in Mumbai humidity?+
Not if the adhesive and the edge sealing are right. Peeling almost always starts at an unbanded edge where moisture entered the substrate. Machine-applied edge banding on all four sides is what prevents it, not the laminate itself.
Which laminate finish is best for a kitchen?+
Matte or suede, in a mid to dark tone with an anti-fingerprint coating. High gloss looks superb for a month and then shows every touch, and in a Mumbai kitchen with daily cooking that is a daily annoyance.
