Natural, reconstituted and the difference that shows
Natural veneer is sliced from a log, so every leaf is different and a run of shutters has to be matched — book-matched for a mirrored figure, slip-matched for a repeating one. Reconstituted veneer is made by dyeing and re-pressing fast-growing timber into a block that is then sliced, giving perfectly repeatable grain. Purists dislike it; anyone specifying forty identical office doors finds it indispensable.
| Veneer | Sheet rate (8 × 4 ft) | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Reconstituted | ₹1,600–2,800 | Uniform, repeatable, any colour |
| Natural oak / ash | ₹2,400–4,200 | Open grain, pale, takes stain well |
| Natural walnut | ₹3,800–6,500 | Deep figure, warm, dominant |
| Teak, Burma-cut | ₹4,500–9,000 | Traditional Indian choice, ages golden |
| Smoked / fumed | ₹4,000–7,500 | Dark through the slice, not surface stain |
The polish is half the cost
Veneer arrives raw. It has to be sanded, grain-filled where open, and sealed — almost always with matt PU polish at ₹180–320 per sq ft, or with a melamine sealer at ₹45–80 per sq ft where budget is tight. So a veneered wardrobe front is a two-trade item and the quotation should show both lines. A rate that names veneer but no polish system is incomplete.
Veneer versus laminate
Laminate is a printed sheet: consistent, hard, ready to use, and visibly a print if you look at the repeat. Veneer is real wood: it has depth under a raking light, it takes a chip that can be sanded and re-polished rather than replaced, and it will vary panel to panel. Clients who want “the wood to match exactly” usually want laminate and have not been told so.
In Mumbai, keep veneer off anything that meets standing water — no veneered kitchen base unit plinths, no bathroom vanity fronts unless they are fully sealed and above splash level. See luxury interiors for how we detail it, and the finish guide for the full comparison.
Frequently asked questions
How thick is furniture veneer?+
0.4–0.6 mm for standard decorative veneer in India. Thicker 1–1.5 mm "engineered" veneers exist for surfaces that may be re-sanded, but the extra thickness is rarely needed on a shutter that is never re-worked.
Does veneer need polishing every few years?+
A matt PU finish holds for eight to twelve years indoors. It can be cleaned and locally repaired, and a full re-polish costs ₹140–240 per sq ft, less than replacing the joinery. Melamine-sealed veneer needs attention sooner, around five years.
Why do my veneer panels not match?+
Because they are slices of a real log. Matching is a sequencing decision made when the sheets are ordered — book-matching or sequence-numbering from a single bundle. If the carpenter bought sheets from two bundles, no amount of polish will fix it.
Is veneer more expensive than laminate?+
Yes, roughly two to three times once polishing is included — about ₹420–900 per sq ft finished against ₹150–300 for laminate. The case for veneer is depth and repairability, not price.
