What owning it involves
Marble is calcium carbonate, so it reacts with acid. Lemon, vinegar, wine and several household cleaners etch it — leaving a dull mark that is not a stain and cannot be wiped away; it has to be re-polished. It is also softer than granite at 3–4 on the Mohs scale, so it scratches. Both are characteristics, not defects, and in Europe a marble floor with a patina is the point. Indian clients often expect a showroom finish permanently, which marble cannot give.
- Seal on installation and re-seal every 12–18 months.
- Use it on floors, feature walls, vanity tops and table tops — not on a kitchen worktop where citrus lands.
- Diamond re-polishing costs ₹45–90 per sq ft and restores a dulled floor completely.
- Book-matched slabs for a feature wall must be ordered together and cut in sequence.
Italian versus Indian marble
Indian marble — Makrana, Ambaji, Rajnagar, Katni — is harder, denser and considerably cheaper, at ₹90–350 per sq ft. It takes a beautiful polish and is more forgiving underfoot. What it does not usually have is the fine, translucent white ground and the graphic veining of Statuario. In a Mumbai flat we often specify Indian marble for floors and a single Italian slab where it is actually seen — a foyer, a vanity, a backsplash. That keeps the drama and halves the bill.
Laying is a skilled trade: 20 mm slabs on a full cement bed, level within 1 mm, with joints under 1 mm filled with matching epoxy. See luxury interiors for projects where stone leads the scheme.
Frequently asked questions
Is Italian marble suitable for Indian homes?+
On floors, feature walls and vanities, yes, provided you accept a patina and commit to sealing. On a kitchen counter it is a poor choice — the acids in an Indian kitchen etch it within months.
Why is Statuario so expensive?+
Scarcity. The white ground with clean grey veining comes from a limited part of the Carrara basin, and slab selection is severe. Prices also move with what the international market pays, not with Indian demand.
Does Italian marble turn yellow?+
It can, where moisture rises from the bed below and carries iron or salts to the surface. Correct laying on a properly cured, dry bed with the right adhesive prevents it — the usual cause is laying over damp screed.
How do I remove etch marks from marble?+
Light etching can be buffed with a marble polishing powder. Deeper marks need diamond re-polishing by a stone specialist at ₹45–90 per sq ft. Neither is a disaster; budget a re-polish every seven to ten years on a busy floor.
