Gloss and matte are two different products
High-gloss acrylic is the reason the material became popular: a bright, seamless face that reflects light and makes a small kitchen feel larger. It is also a fingerprint magnet, and in a dark colour it shows every smear from breakfast onwards. Matte acrylic — sometimes sold as anti-fingerprint or soft-touch — keeps the depth and the flatness while hiding daily use. In a family kitchen in Mumbai, matte is almost always the right call.
| Type | Added rate per sq ft | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| High-gloss acrylic, 1 mm | ₹250–380 | Maximum reflection, shows prints |
| Matte / anti-fingerprint acrylic | ₹280–400 | Same depth, far more forgiving |
| Acrylic with aluminium edge profile | ₹340–480 | Crisper edge, no banding line |
| Glossy laminate (for comparison) | ₹110–190 | Flatter look, half the price |
What it will and will not tolerate
- Heat: keep it away from an uncovered hob edge and out of contact with an oven housing without a heat shield.
- Abrasives: no scouring pad, ever. A microfibre cloth and dilute soap is the whole maintenance regime.
- Scratches: visible and permanent on gloss. Minor swirls can be machine-polished once by a specialist.
- Edges: the banding is the weak point. Laser-applied or hot-air banding with no visible glue line is worth paying for.
Acrylic versus laminate versus PU
Laminate costs roughly half and is tougher, but it reads as a surface rather than a depth. PU gives the same seamlessness in any colour including matt, is repairable, and costs similar to acrylic — but it is a wet trade with cure time and site dust risk. Acrylic arrives as a finished panel, which is why it dominates in factory-built modular kitchens.
The deciding question is usually repairability against consistency. If you want a flawless, repeatable surface delivered on a date, acrylic. If you want something that can be made good in ten years, PU. See kitchen costs in Mumbai for how the finish moves the total.
Frequently asked questions
Is acrylic better than laminate for kitchen shutters?+
It looks better and costs about twice as much. Laminate is more impact-tolerant and easier to replace. If the kitchen is the visual centre of an open-plan flat, acrylic earns its money; on wardrobe internals it does not.
Does acrylic finish scratch easily?+
Gloss does, and the scratches catch the light. Matte acrylic is much more forgiving. Neither survives a scouring pad. Treat both as you would a car bonnet: soft cloth, mild detergent, no abrasives.
Can acrylic shutters be repaired?+
Light swirl marks on gloss can sometimes be machine-polished. A deep scratch or a chipped edge cannot — the shutter face is replaced. Keep the shade code and supplier details from handover so a match is possible.
Is acrylic the same as glossy laminate?+
No. Acrylic is a 1 mm cast sheet with genuine optical depth; glossy laminate is a printed paper laminate with a shiny topcoat. Side by side, the difference in reflection quality is obvious, as is the difference in price.
