What is a membrane finish?

Why it exists

Profiled doors are expensive to finish. A shaker frame in laminate needs mitred pieces and shows a joint at every corner; in PU it needs spraying and cure time. A membrane press does the whole door in one operation — face, moulding, returns and edges — with no visible seam at all. That is the entire commercial case, and for a country-style or shaker kitchen on a modest budget it is a genuinely good answer.

Costs in context

₹110–180per sq ft, membrane shutter
₹150–300per sq ft, laminate shutter
₹220–400per sq ft, acrylic shutter
60–70°Ctemperature at which foil starts to lift

The heat rule

The failure mode is always the same: the foil lifts at an edge next to a heat source. Never place a membrane shutter directly beside or above an uncovered hob, against an oven housing without an insulated spacer, or where a dishwasher vents steam onto the door edge. In a Mumbai kitchen where the tadka happens twice a day, that is a real constraint and not a theoretical one.

Confused with laminate

A membrane door and a laminated door can look similar in a photograph, but the substrate is different. Membrane needs MDF or HDHMR, because the profile is routed into the board itself; laminate is bonded to a flat face and the profile has to be built up. Membrane also cannot be repaired — once the foil lifts, the door is replaced. For a wardrobe in a dry bedroom, that trade is usually acceptable. See wardrobe design or kitchen design for where we use it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a membrane finish last?+

Eight to ten years in a bedroom, five to seven in a kitchen away from heat. The finish does not wear out so much as it fails at one edge; once that starts, the door is replaced rather than repaired.

Can membrane shutters be made in any colour?+

Within the foil ranges available, yes — solid colours, woodgrains and a few textures. It is not a made-to-order colour system like PU, so if you are matching a specific shade, check the foil swatch before committing.

Is membrane the same as PVC laminate?+

Related but not the same. Membrane is a foil thermoformed over a routed board in a press. PVC laminate is a flat sheet bonded to a flat face. Only the membrane process wraps a moulded profile in one piece.

Does membrane work in Mumbai humidity?+

The foil itself is unaffected, but the MDF beneath it is vulnerable if water reaches an unsealed cut-out — a hinge boring or a handle hole. Keep membrane out of wet areas and seal any site-made cut-out before fixing.
