How to Choose Kitchen Shutter Finishes

A kitchen shutter is cleaned four hundred times a year and cooked against every day. That narrows the field quickly.

What a kitchen shutter actually has to survive

Before comparing finishes, it is worth being precise about the conditions. An Indian kitchen shutter faces four stresses that a wardrobe shutter never does. Airborne oil from tempering and frying, which condenses on every vertical surface within two metres of the hob and becomes a sticky film that needs detergent, not a dry cloth. Steam and radiant heat from the hob and the oven, concentrated on the shutters immediately adjacent. Repeated wet-cloth cleaning, roughly daily, which attacks the edge banding before it attacks the face. And in Mumbai, four months of high humidity that any exposed core will absorb.

A finish that performs beautifully on a wardrobe can be the wrong answer eighteen inches from a burner. That is why we specify kitchens by zone rather than picking one finish for the whole room.

Design and build under one accountable roof

Zone by zone

The practical answer for most kitchens is not one finish but two, allocated by what each area has to endure.

Base units around the hob

Matte laminate. It takes daily oil and wet cloths, and a damaged shutter is replaced for ₹2,800–₹4,500.

Wall units away from heat

Where gloss is wanted, this is where it belongs — above eye level, out of fingerprint range.

Tall unit and larder

Matte laminate or PU. These get handled constantly and show wear at the handle before anywhere else.

Open or glazed display

Lacquered glass or framed glass shutters, with LED profile inside. Keep it away from the hob.

Utility and washing area

WPC shutters, not wood-based board. Standing water is a certainty here, not a risk.

Under-sink

BWP carcass regardless of finish, with a sealed bottom and a PVC tray. This is where kitchens fail first.

Why membrane shutters keep disappointing people

Membrane shutters — a PVC foil vacuum-pressed over a routed MDF core — are attractive on price and produce a seamless profiled look that laminate cannot. The problem is the adhesive. Sustained heat and steam soften it, and the foil lifts at the edges, usually at the shutter nearest the hob and the one above the dishwasher. Once it lifts it cannot be re-bonded; the shutter is replaced. In a dry climate and away from heat they perform acceptably for eight to ten years. In a Mumbai kitchen we have seen edge lift within three.

A worked comparison: a 10-foot L-shaped kitchen

Abstract rates are hard to weigh. Below is the same kitchen — 10 running feet of base, 8 running feet of wall units, one 3-foot tall unit, BWP carcass throughout, Hettich soft-close hardware — priced in three finishes, so the finish decision can be seen as an actual sum of money rather than a rate.

One kitchen, three finishes — 2026 Mumbai
ElementMatte laminateSuede acrylicPU spray
Base units, 10 rft₹1,65,000₹3,05,000₹3,90,000
Wall units, 8 rft₹1,04,000₹1,92,000₹2,44,000
Tall unit, 3 rft₹58,000₹1,02,000₹1,28,000
Hardware (same in all three)₹64,000₹64,000₹64,000
Total, ex-GST₹3,91,000₹6,63,000₹8,26,000

Counter, splashback, sink, chimney and appliances are excluded and are identical across the three options.

The gap between the first and second column is ₹2.72 lakh, which is roughly a full wardrobe plus the lighting for two rooms. That is the trade-off worth thinking about — not whether acrylic is better than laminate in the abstract, but whether this particular upgrade is the best use of that particular sum in your particular home. In our experience, clients who spend it on the kitchen wall units only, and keep matte laminate below, end up happiest.

Things that matter more than the finish

  1. Carcass grade. BWP IS:710 under the sink and across all base units. A ₹4,000 shutter on a ₹900 carcass is a two-year kitchen.
  2. Edge banding. 2 mm PVC on every exposed edge, including the top and bottom edges nobody sees. This is the first point of water entry.
  3. Shutter thickness. 18 mm for shutters up to 600 mm wide; below that, wide shutters bow within a year.
  4. Hinge count. Two hinges up to 900 mm of shutter height, three above it, four above 1,600 mm. Under-hinging is the most common cause of shutters that will not align.
  5. Handle type. Profile or J-groove handles avoid the grease trap that a protruding D-handle creates, and they cost less than most people expect.
  6. Colour depth. Very dark matte shows every water spot in hard-water areas; a mid-tone hides both dust and drips.
1 mmlaminate thickness worth paying for
2 mmedge banding on every exposed edge
18 mmshutter thickness above 600 mm width
₹2,800–4,500cost to replace one damaged shutter

Choose the finish you are willing to wipe every single evening. Everything else is a showroom decision.

How to test before committing

Ask for A4 samples of your two shortlisted finishes and take them home. Put them on the kitchen counter, under your own lighting, for a week. Press a thumb on each and see what it leaves. Wipe a drop of cooking oil off each with a dry cloth and then with detergent. Look at both at 9pm under artificial light, not at 11am in a showroom under 5000 K spotlights — every finish looks good there, which is the point of a showroom. Most clients change their mind at least once during this week, and the sample costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Which kitchen shutter finish is most durable in India?+

One-millimetre matte laminate on a BWP IS:710 carcass gives the best balance of oil resistance, cleanability and life, typically ten to fourteen years. Lacquered glass lasts longer but costs roughly twice as much and cannot be used everywhere.

Is acrylic worth the extra cost over laminate?+

On upper units and feature runs, sometimes. Acrylic gives a depth of gloss laminate cannot match, at ₹2,600–₹3,500 per running foot against ₹1,450–₹1,950. Below counter height it shows fingerprints and cleaning swirls, so most of our kitchens use it selectively rather than throughout.

Why do membrane shutters fail near the hob?+

The PVC foil is vacuum-bonded to an MDF core with an adhesive that softens under sustained heat and steam. The foil lifts at the edges and cannot be re-bonded, so the shutter has to be replaced. In a humid coastal kitchen we have seen this within three years.

Can a damaged kitchen shutter be repaired?+

PU-finished shutters can be filled and resprayed. Laminate, acrylic, membrane and glass shutters cannot be patched invisibly and are replaced — ₹2,800–₹4,500 for a standard base shutter, which is one reason a widely available finish beats a discontinued one.

Does shutter finish affect resale value?+

Marginally, and less than condition does. A well-maintained matte laminate kitchen presents better at sale than a high-gloss acrylic one with visible swirl marks and a lifted edge. Buyers read wear, not specification.

What thickness should kitchen shutters be?+

Eighteen millimetres for anything above 600 mm wide, and 18 mm is the sensible default throughout. Sixteen-millimetre shutters are used to save cost and bow visibly within a year on wide units, particularly in humid conditions.
