Boards

Particle board: the honest case for and against

Particle board is the board everyone warns you about and almost everyone owns. There is a narrow set of jobs it does well and a wide set it should never be near.

Grades and rates

Particle board grades and 2026 Indian rates, ex-GST
TypeDensityRate (₹/sq ft, 18 mm)Typical application
Plain particle board550 – 620 kg/m³₹35 – 50Substrate under laminate in temporary work
High density particle board620 – 680 kg/m³₹45 – 60Workstation tops, shelving in dry offices
Pre-laminated (both faces)600 – 680 kg/m³₹65 – 110Office storage, modular workstation carcasses
Moisture-resistant particle board640 – 700 kg/m³₹90 – 140Marginally better; still not for wet areas

Boards are commonly sold in 8 × 4 ft and 9 × 6 ft sheets. The larger sheet reduces wastage on workstation runs.

The four jobs it does well

  • Office workstation systems. Factory-made, edge-banded on all four sides, sitting on a steel understructure in an air-conditioned floor plate. This is particle board doing exactly what it was designed for, and replacing it with plywood would add cost for no benefit.
  • Knock-down storage in dry offices. Pedestals, credenzas and open shelving that will be replaced with the lease.
  • Exhibition and short-life fit-outs. Anything with a horizon under three years.
  • Substrate under a laminate in a dry, unloaded position — a notice board backing, a modesty panel, a display riser.

Why it fails in Mumbai fitted joinery

  1. Moisture. Chips swell and burst the resin bond. A pre-laminated particle board wardrobe bottom in a Malad flat, wet-mopped weekly, will develop a swollen front rail within two years. The laminate face stays intact while the board behind it turns to sponge, which is why the damage is invisible until the shutter stops closing.
  2. Screw retention. A hinge screw into particle board edge has perhaps 40% of the withdrawal strength it would have in BWP ply. Soft-close hinges impose repeated shock loads, and over a few thousand cycles the screw works loose.
  3. Point loading. A shelf carrying a stack of crockery will dish. There is no fix.
  4. Edge damage. Corners chip on impact and cannot be filled convincingly.

If you are going to use it, use it properly

  • Specify pre-laminated with factory edge banding on all four edges, including the hidden ones. A raw particle board edge in a Mumbai office will fray within a year of cleaning staff mopping against it.
  • Use cam-and-dowel or minifix connectors rather than plain screws for carcass joints — they distribute load into the face, not the edge.
  • Never put it on the floor. Steel or nylon feet, minimum 75 mm.
  • Keep it out of pantries, washrooms and any area cleaned with a wet mop.
  • Buy E1-class boards for emission, and ventilate a new office fit-out before occupation.

Care, life and BOQ wording

  • Dry dust and a barely damp cloth. Never let water stand on a horizontal surface, and never use a steam mop near the base of a unit.
  • Realistic life: 8–12 years in an air-conditioned Mumbai office, 3–6 years in a residential flat, less in a kitchen or utility.
  • BOQ: “Workstation carcass and storage in 18 mm pre-laminated particle board, minimum density 620 kg/m³, E1 emission class, factory edge banded 2 mm on all four edges, assembled with cam-and-dowel connectors.”
  • BOQ: “Particle board not permitted for any residential fitted joinery, wet-area component, or any shelf exceeding 750 mm clear span.”

Frequently asked questions

Is particle board the same as MDF?+

No. Particle board is made from coarse chips at 550–680 kg/m³; MDF is fine fibre at 700–800. MDF is denser, machines cleanly and holds screws better. Particle board is cheaper and lighter. They are not interchangeable and a quotation that treats them as such is worth questioning.

Why do most office workstations use particle board?+

Because in that application it is the right material: factory-built, fully edge-banded, mounted on a steel frame, in a dry air-conditioned space, with a replacement horizon that matches the lease. Specifying plywood there adds cost and weight without adding useful life.

Can particle board be repaired if it swells?+

No. The chips have expanded and the resin bond has broken; there is nothing to re-compress. The component is replaced. This is the practical reason we keep it out of residential joinery in a city with this much humidity.

Is pre-laminated particle board waterproof?+

The laminate face is; the board and the edges are not. Water reaches the core through the edge band joint, through a screw hole or from below. Since the face stays perfect, the swelling is usually discovered when a door stops closing.

What does Greenbox use instead in homes?+

BWP plywood for carcasses everywhere in a Mumbai flat, with HDHMR or MDF for routed shutter faces. The board cost difference on a full 2BHK is real but modest against the cost of replacing joinery at year five.
