| Thickness | Rate (₹/sq ft) | Sheet weight (8 × 4 ft) | Standard use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | ₹58 – 85 | 10 – 12 kg | Cabinet backs, drawer bottoms, panelling substrate |
| 9 mm | ₹70 – 98 | 15 – 18 kg | Shutter cores for light doors, false ceiling pelmets |
| 12 mm | ₹85 – 120 | 20 – 24 kg | Internal partitions within units, drawer sides |
| 19 mm | ₹110 – 165 | 32 – 38 kg | Carcass sides, shelves, shutter cores, counters |
| 25 mm | ₹150 – 215 | 42 – 50 kg | Long unsupported shelves, seating bases, table tops |
Weight is the fastest field check available to a non-specialist. Low-density softwood cores are 20–30% lighter than the figures above.
Five checks that take ten minutes on delivery
- Edge stamp. Read along the 8 ft edge for the manufacturer name, IS 710 and an ISI licence number, stamped into the ply, repeating along the length. Stickers and rubber stamps are not the same thing.
- Weigh a sheet. Any weighbridge slip or a bathroom scale under one corner will do. Density is the single best proxy for core quality.
- Cut a corner. Count plies, look for core gaps, overlaps and patched veneer. A void of 10 mm across is a screw that will never hold.
- Boil a 75 mm coupon for three hours. A cheap induction plate and a steel bowl on site will do it. Genuine phenolic bonding will not open at the glue line; urea-bonded ply will separate.
- Ask for the mill test certificate on any order above about fifty sheets. Reputable mills issue it as routine and the dealer’s reaction tells you a lot.
Where BWP earns its premium, and where it does not
BWP is not a luxury in Mumbai; it is the sane default. But specifying 25 mm BWP everywhere, or marine ply where BWP will do, is money spent for nothing.
| Location | Correct grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen carcass including loft | 19 mm BWP | Steam rises; the loft is as exposed as the base unit |
| Bathroom vanity and mirror unit | 19 mm BWP | Constant surface moisture; nothing lower survives |
| Utility, washing machine platform | 19 mm BWP | Repeated wetting and drying cycles |
| Bedroom wardrobe in an inland flat | 19 mm BWP or good BWR | BWR is defensible in Mulund or Powai; we still quote BWP |
| Bedroom wardrobe within 2 km of the sea | 19 mm BWP | Salt-laden air keeps the fabric of the flat damp all year |
| Balcony and open-to-sky joinery | Marine ply or WPC | This is where marine grade is actually justified |
| Drawer bottoms and cabinet backs | 6 mm BWP | Thicker here is pure cost with no benefit |
What the monsoon and the sea actually do
Phenol formaldehyde bonding does not care about water. What fails in Mumbai, even in genuine BWP, is everything around it: raw cut edges that wick water into the core, unsealed screw holes under a sink, and untreated cores that feed powder-post beetle in the humid months.
- Seal every cut edge. Site carpenters cut a sheet and leave the new edge raw; that edge is now the cheapest ply in the flat.
- Insist on borer and termite treatment to the preservative clause of the standard, and keep the treatment certificate. Coastal Mumbai is prime borer territory and the damage appears as fine powder at the base of a unit about eighteen months in.
- Raise kitchen and utility carcasses on adjustable PVC or nylon legs, never directly on the floor slab. A 100 mm gap is the difference between a wet-mopped floor and a swollen bottom rail.
- Under sinks, run an aluminium or stainless tray. The board is waterproof; the fasteners and the joints are not.
BOQ wording and warranty
- “All carcass and shelving in 19 mm plywood conforming to IS 710 (BWP), 100% hardwood core, ISI marked with visible licence number, preservative treated against borer and termite.”
- “Contractor to submit manufacturer’s warranty card and batch invoice for all plywood supplied; sheet edge markings to remain legible until inspection.”
- “All cut edges to be sealed before assembly. Exposed edges to receive 2 mm PVC banding; concealed edges to receive sealer coat.”
- “Random sample of one sheet per fifty may be cut and boil-tested by the client at contractor’s cost if the test fails.”
- Manufacturer warranties on branded BWP are generally long but cover the board, not the joinery. Read what is excluded before treating it as protection.

Frequently asked questions
How much more does BWP cost than BWR on a whole flat?+
On a 2BHK with a kitchen and three wardrobes, the board delta is roughly ₹45,000–70,000 against a total joinery package of several lakh. Expressed as a percentage of the project it is small; expressed as the cost of dismantling a swollen kitchen it is negligible. Our BWP versus BWR page has the numbers side by side.
Is marine plywood better than BWP?+
Marine ply is BWP with a stricter core specification intended for boat building and permanent exterior exposure. Inside a flat it is an unnecessary premium of 30–40%. The place we do specify it is open balcony joinery and anything permanently exposed to weather.
Can I trust a plywood brand name alone?+
Brand narrows the risk; it does not remove it, because counterfeiting of edge printing is common in the Mumbai market. Buy through a dealer who will give you a GST invoice naming the product, keep the batch details, and do the weight check. Invoice plus weight catches almost everything.
What thickness should kitchen shelves be?+
19 mm BWP for any shelf up to about 900 mm of clear span, and 25 mm or a 19 mm shelf with a stiffener beyond that. A 19 mm shelf carrying a row of steel containers over a 1,200 mm span will sag visibly within two years, and no board grade prevents that — it is a span problem, not a quality problem.
Does BWP plywood need waterproofing after installation?+
The board does not, but the assembly benefits. Seal the cut edges, band the exposed ones, keep the carcass off the floor on legs, and put a tray under the sink. Those four steps matter more than any surface coating you could apply afterwards.
