Plywood vs MDF: use both, in the right places

This is presented as a choice and it is not one. Plywood is a carcass material and MDF is a shutter-face material, and a good kitchen contains both.

What a full-MDF kitchen actually costs you

A contractor offering an MDF-carcass kitchen at a materially lower price is not being dishonest about the price; he is being quiet about the horizon.

The two failures we are called out to most often

Across ten years of inspecting other people’s joinery in Mumbai flats, two failure patterns account for most of what we see, and both come from putting MDF where plywood belonged.

  1. The swollen sink base. The bottom rail of the base unit under the kitchen sink is the wettest 200 mm in any Indian home. In MDF it absorbs, swells, loses thickness and the shutter stops closing. The laminate face stays perfect, which is why nobody notices until the door binds.
  2. The dropped wardrobe shutter. A 7 ft shutter hung on hinges screwed into an MDF edge. Soft-close hinges impose repeated shock loads, the screws work loose in the fibre, and the shutter sags at the leading edge. Re-screwing into the same hole does not hold.
  3. Both are preventable at specification stage and expensive afterwards. The sink base needs a plywood or WPC carcass; the shutter needs face fixings or threaded inserts.
  4. Neither is a manufacturing defect. The board performed as MDF performs. It was specified into a job it is not for.
  5. The tell at quotation stage is a single board line for the whole job. A specification that does not vary by component was not written by someone thinking about either failure.

Where MDF is genuinely superior

  • Routed detail. A shaker rail, a fluted panel or a CNC jaali in MDF has crisp edges that need no filling. The same detail in plywood is fuzzy at the cut and delaminates at thin sections.
  • Flatness under gloss. Under a high-gloss PU or an acrylic sheet, plywood’s slight surface variation telegraphs. MDF does not.
  • Paint economy. A sprayed MDF panel needs materially less putty and sanding than a sprayed plywood panel, which shows up in the finishing rate.
  • Curves. Kerf-cut MDF bends to a radius at low cost; bending plywood is expensive and limited.
  • Cost on shutter faces. Where the panel is dry, sealed and not load-bearing, MDF does the job for half the board cost.

Verdict

Reading a board specification in a Mumbai quotation
If a quotation says…What to do
“MDF carcass, laminate finish”Ask for BWP ply carcass and re-price
“Plywood shutters, PU finish”Ask whether HDHMR would give a flatter face
“MDF for routed shutters, BWP carcass”Correct specification
“Board as per market standard”Not a specification; ask for grade and standard number
“Waterproof MDF”Moisture-resistant, not waterproof; still not a carcass material

The one-line answer: BWP plywood for the box, MDF or HDHMR for the face when the face needs machining. Anyone who tells you it is one or the other for the whole job is simplifying in their own interest.

Frequently asked questions

Is MDF cheaper than plywood?+

Roughly half the board cost at 18 mm. On shutter faces that is a real and legitimate saving. On carcasses it is a deferred cost, because an MDF carcass in a Mumbai kitchen has a five to eight year life against eighteen to twenty-five for BWP plywood.

Can MDF be used anywhere in a kitchen?+

As routed shutter faces on a BWP carcass, with all edges sealed, yes. As the carcass, as shelves, or anywhere under the sink, no. The sink base is the single worst place for MDF in an Indian home.

Why do routed shutters have to be MDF?+

Because plywood is layered. A router cutting across the plies leaves a ragged edge and exposes voids, and thin sections in a fluted pattern delaminate. MDF is homogeneous, so a machined edge is clean and needs no filling before spraying.

What about moisture-resistant MDF?+

It resists humidity swelling better than standard MDF and it is a genuine improvement. It is not waterproof, and a soaked cut edge will still destroy it. Use it in humid rooms away from direct water; do not use it as a substitute for plywood in a wet area.

How do I check which board was actually used?+

Look at a cut edge inside a cabinet. Plywood shows distinct layers; MDF is uniform brown; HDHMR is uniform and denser; particle board shows visible chips. Any carpenter can show you an offcut, and if none is available that is itself informative.
