Grades, densities and how to tell them apart
| Grade | Density | Colour cue | Rate (₹/sq ft, 18 mm) | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard MDF | 700 – 760 kg/m³ | Pale brown, uniform | ₹48 – 70 | Painted panelling, backs, dry-area shutters |
| High density MDF | 760 – 820 kg/m³ | Darker, noticeably heavier sheet | ₹62 – 85 | Routed and PU-sprayed shutters, fluted panels |
| Moisture-resistant MDF | 760 – 820 kg/m³ | Green-dyed core, visible on a cut edge | ₹95 – 150 | Humid rooms away from direct water |
| Pre-laminated MDF | 700 – 760 kg/m³ | Factory laminate both faces | ₹85 – 140 | Office storage, shelving, flat-pack work |
| Fire-retardant MDF | 760 – 820 kg/m³ | Usually red-dyed core | ₹150 – 240 | Commercial fit-outs to landlord fire specification |
Green core does not mean waterproof. It means the resin system resists humidity swelling better than standard MDF. Water sitting on a cut edge will still destroy it.
What MDF is genuinely better at than plywood
- Machining. No grain, no voids, no core gaps. A router leaves an edge that needs no filling, which is why a shaker rail on MDF looks crisp and the same profile on ply looks fuzzy.
- Flatness. A 2,400 × 1,200 sheet of MDF is flatter than any plywood, which matters under a high-gloss finish where waviness reads as a defect.
- Paint hold. The homogeneous surface takes putty, primer and PU with far less preparation. A sprayed MDF panel costs less to finish than a sprayed ply panel.
- Cost of curved work. Kerf-cut MDF bends to a radius cheaply; bending ply is expensive and limited.
- Fluting and jaali. CNC-cut patterns hold their detail; the same pattern in ply delaminates at the thin sections.
Where MDF fails, stated without hedging
- Water. Fibre swells irreversibly and does not recover on drying. A base unit bottom rail in MDF under a Mumbai kitchen sink will be spongy within three monsoons. Nothing you coat it with reliably prevents this.
- Edge screws. A hinge screwed into a 18 mm MDF edge will strip under normal use. Use face fixings, through bolts or threaded inserts.
- Long spans under load. MDF creeps. An 18 mm MDF shelf carrying books over 900 mm will take a permanent set within a year.
- Repeated disassembly. Screw holes do not recover. Flat-pack MDF furniture that is moved twice usually arrives at the third destination loose.
MDF in Mumbai humidity
Standard MDF in a non-air-conditioned Mumbai flat picks up several percentage points of moisture through the monsoon and gives it back by February. That cycle causes two visible effects: a slight swelling at any unsealed edge, and telegraphing, where the fibre texture rises faintly through a sprayed film.
- Seal all six faces of every MDF component before it leaves the workshop. Edges first — they absorb five to ten times faster than faces.
- Use moisture-resistant grade for anything in a kitchen, even the dry parts, and pair it with a BWP ply carcass rather than an MDF one.
- Do not store MDF flat on a site floor slab during monsoon. The bottom sheet of a stack will wick moisture from the concrete overnight.
- Within 2 km of the sea we keep MDF to routed shutter faces only, on a BWP carcass. The salt itself is harmless to MDF; the permanently elevated humidity is not.
Care, life and BOQ wording
- Painted MDF wants the same care as any sprayed finish: damp cloth, no solvents, no standing water at the base of a panel.
- Realistic life on routed and PU-sprayed MDF shutters in a Mumbai bedroom: 12–15 years. In a kitchen base run: 5–8, which is why we do not use it there.
- BOQ: “Routed shutter faces in 18 mm MDF, minimum density 760 kg/m³, CNC machined to approved profile; all six faces sealed prior to finishing. Carcass to be 19 mm BWP ply — MDF not permitted for carcass.”
- BOQ: “All hinge and runner fixings into face material, not board edge; threaded inserts where edge fixing is unavoidable.”

Frequently asked questions
Is MDF bad quality?+
No — it is a specialised board used in the wrong place far too often. For routed, painted and curved work it outperforms plywood. For carcasses, wet areas and loaded shelves it is the wrong choice. The failures blamed on MDF are almost always specification failures.
Can MDF be used in a Mumbai kitchen at all?+
As routed shutter faces on a BWP plywood carcass, yes, with all edges sealed and the sink base built differently. As the carcass itself, no. We have dismantled enough swollen MDF kitchens in Andheri and Borivali to be firm about that.
What is the difference between MDF and HDHMR?+
HDHMR is a denser, more moisture-tolerant engineered board that holds screws better and costs roughly twice as much. For routed shutters that will be sprayed, HDHMR is the upgrade worth paying for. The detail is on our MDF versus HDHMR page.
Does MDF release formaldehyde?+
All urea-bonded boards do, at declining rates over the first months. Ask for E1-class board, which is the common Indian standard for interior use, and ventilate the flat for the first few weeks after installation. Sealing all faces also reduces emission.
Why is my painted MDF panel showing texture through the paint?+
Telegraphing — the fibre surface has raised slightly, usually from moisture uptake before sealing, and it now shows through the film. It is prevented by sealing the board before it sits on site, and corrected only by sanding back, re-putty and re-spray.
