What a fittings specialist covers
| Category | Typical items | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Basin and sink mixers | Single lever, three-hole, wall mounted | Spout reach and projection over the basin |
| Shower systems | Overhead, hand shower, rails, thermostatic sets | Minimum pressure and flow rate |
| Concealed valves | In-wall bodies and matching trims | Finished wall depth and service access |
| Flushing systems | In-wall frames, cisterns, flush plates | Frame fixing into masonry or a steel frame |
| Kitchen taps | Pull-out sprays, professional taps | Counter hole size and back clearance |
| Water filtration and dispensers | Under-sink systems | Cartridge access and power provision |
Market bands observed in Mumbai
| Item | Band we observe | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Single-lever basin mixer | ₹11,000 – 45,000 | Series and finish drive the spread |
| Thermostatic shower set | ₹35,000 – 1,40,000 | Requires adequate and balanced pressure |
| Concealed valve body | ₹9,000 – 30,000 | Frequently priced separately from the trim |
| Overhead rain shower | ₹15,000 – 85,000 | Check minimum pressure before buying |
| In-wall flush frame and plate | ₹26,000 – 70,000 | Structural item; fix to masonry or steel properly |
| Kitchen pull-out tap | ₹18,000 – 65,000 | Hose and spray head are the wear parts |
Buying observations, not official pricing. Trim and valve are often separate line items, which is a common source of quotation confusion.
Pressure, flow and the Mumbai building
Premium showers are engineered around an assumed supply. If the assumption is wrong, the shower disappoints and no amount of money spent on it will help.
- Measure running pressure at the bathroom outlet. Many older Mumbai buildings deliver well under one bar to upper-floor bathrooms.
- Check the minimum pressure stated for the specific shower or thermostatic set before it is ordered.
- Where pressure is short, install a booster pump with a proper anti-vibration mounting and an accessible location, or select a low-pressure-rated head.
- Thermostatic valves need reasonably balanced hot and cold pressures. A gravity-fed cold and a pressurised geyser feed can produce temperature swings that look like a product fault.
- Flow regulators reduce consumption and can improve the feel of a shower at moderate pressure. They are cheap and often already supplied in the box.
Hard water, finishes and maintenance
- Mumbai water in several suburbs leaves scale. Aerators and shower faces should be removable and descalable — check that they are on the model you are buying.
- Descale aerators twice a year in a solution of dilute citric acid. This resolves the large majority of reported flow complaints.
- Chrome is the most forgiving finish for hard water and salt air. Brushed and coloured finishes look better and need drying after use.
- Do not clean fittings with acidic bathroom cleaners. They attack the plating at the edges and the damage is permanent.
- Keep spare cartridges for the main shower valve. It is the component most likely to need replacement in year seven or eight and the one most likely to hold up a bathroom.
- Record the series name and finish code of every fitting at handover. Trims are updated over time, and an exact match in year six depends entirely on having that reference written down somewhere other than a memory.
Our independence
Greenbox is an independent design and build studio and is not a dealer, distributor or channel partner for Grohe or for any other sanitary manufacturer. We specify fittings on merit, buy through Mumbai suppliers at market rates, and pass through supplier invoices where we procure on a client’s behalf. Warranties are offered by the manufacturer on the manufacturer’s terms and are separate from our workmanship warranty.

Frequently asked questions
Can I mix Grohe fittings with another brand of sanitaryware?+
Yes, and it is common practice. Fittings and ceramics are separate purchases with separate interfaces. What must match is the flush frame to the WC pan, and the trim to its own valve body — within those constraints, mixing suppliers is normal and often gives a better bathroom for the money.
Why are the valve and the trim priced separately?+
Because they are installed at different stages: the valve body goes into the wall during the plumbing phase and the trim goes on after tiling. Quotations sometimes list only one of them, which is a common reason a bathroom quotation looks cheaper than it is. Check that both appear.
Is Greenbox a Grohe partner?+
No. We hold no dealership, distributorship or channel arrangement with Grohe or any other brand. We specify on merit, buy on the open market and pass through invoices where we procure for a client.
Do premium fittings need higher water pressure?+
Often, yes — particularly thermostatic sets and large rain heads. Check the stated minimum against measured pressure at your bathroom before ordering. In many older Mumbai buildings a booster pump is the difference between a good shower and an expensive disappointment.
How do I keep fittings looking new in Mumbai?+
Wipe them dry after use, descale aerators twice a year, and never use acidic bathroom cleaners on plated surfaces. Chrome tolerates this regime best; brushed and coloured finishes reward it most.
