The product scope, and the demerger that changed it
Clients and contractors sometimes still assume a single source for plywood and MDF from this brand. Since 2019 the MDF and allied panel business has sat in a separate listed company, and that has a practical consequence: if your specification names one brand for plywood and expects the same warranty to extend to MDF shutter blanks, check it rather than assume.
| Product | Where it sits | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Plywood, BWP and BWR grades | Greenply Industries | The main carcass material |
| Blockboard | Greenply Industries | Long shelves and flush doors |
| Decorative veneers | Greenply Industries | Faced panels and shutters |
| Flush doors | Greenply Industries | Internal door leaves |
| MDF and allied panels | Demerged separate company since 2019 | Verify the supplier and its own warranty |
Grades and Mumbai market bands

| MR plywood | IS 303 MR | ₹56 – 92 per sq ft | Dry-climate work only |
| Blockboard, BWP grade | IS 1659 | ₹98 – 128 per sq ft | Long shelves, table tops |

Buying observations only, not official pricing. Dealer discounting on plywood in Mumbai varies considerably with order size.
Specifying board by component
The efficient specification uses different materials for different jobs rather than applying one grade to everything.
| Component | Material | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen and wardrobe carcass | BWP plywood | 19 mm |
| Cabinet backs and drawer bottoms | BWP plywood | 6 mm |
| Shelves under 900 mm span | BWP plywood | 19 mm |
| Shelves over 900 mm span | BWP blockboard, battens along span | 25 mm |
| Routed and sprayed shutter faces | HDHMR or MDF | 18 mm |
| Bathroom vanity carcass | WPC board | 18 mm |
| Internal door leaves | Flush door, blockboard cored | 32 mm |
Verification, because the brand is only half the purchase
- Read the edge for the manufacturer name, grade and ISI licence number stamped into the ply, repeating along the length.
- Weigh a sheet. A genuine 19 mm BWP sheet at 8 × 4 ft is 32–38 kg; anything appreciably lighter has a softwood or void-filled core.
- Cut a corner and count the plies. Look for gaps, overlaps and patches in the core veneers.
- Boil a 75 mm coupon for three hours. Phenolic bonding holds; urea bonding opens at the glue line.
- Keep the GST invoice naming the exact product. Without it, no warranty claim is possible and no dispute is winnable.
Storage and handling on a Mumbai site
Board that is verified on delivery and then ruined in the week before it is used is a common and avoidable loss. Two or three tonnes of plywood sitting in a flat through a monsoon week needs managing.
- Stack sheets flat on battens, never directly on the floor slab. The bottom sheet of a stack will wick moisture out of concrete overnight and arrive at the saw with a swollen edge.
- Keep the stack away from an open window or balcony door. Wind-driven rain in July reaches further into a Mumbai flat than people expect.
- Do not stand sheets on edge against a wall for days. They take a permanent bow and the bow shows in a tall shutter.
- Seal cut edges the same day they are cut. A raw edge left over a weekend in August absorbs enough moisture to matter.
- Cut outside the flat or with extraction. Board dust is the single most common trigger for a society complaint, and a complaint costs working days.
Our independence
Greenbox is an independent design and build studio. We are not a dealer, distributor or channel partner for Greenply, for the demerged panel company or for any other board manufacturer, and we accept no brand-linked incentives. We buy through Mumbai dealers at market rates and pass through supplier invoices where we procure. All figures here are our market observations, not official prices, and warranties are the manufacturers’ own.
Frequently asked questions
Does Greenply make MDF?+
The MDF and allied panel business was demerged into a separate listed company in 2019. If your specification names one brand for both plywood and MDF, confirm the actual manufacturer of each and treat their warranties separately. It is a common source of confusion in quotations.
Which grade should I specify for a Mumbai kitchen?+
BWP plywood to IS 710 for the entire carcass, including the loft, plus 6 mm BWP for backs. In this city the humidity and the monsoon make BWP the baseline rather than an upgrade; the money saved by going to BWR is not worth the risk in a kitchen.
Is Greenbox a Greenply dealer?+
No. We hold no dealership, distributorship or commercial arrangement with Greenply or with any other board manufacturer. We specify on merit, buy on the open market and pass through supplier invoices where we procure for clients.
How do I know the plywood delivered matches the invoice?+
Weigh a sheet, read the stamped edge markings, and cut a corner to check the core. Those three checks take ten minutes and catch nearly every substitution. On orders above about fifty sheets, ask for a mill test certificate as well.
Is blockboard from the same brand as good as its plywood?+
They are different products for different jobs. Blockboard is stiffer over a long span and lighter; plywood holds edge fixings better and handles wet areas. Use blockboard for long shelves, wide tops and flush doors, and plywood for carcasses and anything near water.
