Blockboard: the board for long spans and flush doors

Blockboard is a softwood batten core sandwiched between veneers. It is lighter than plywood, stiffer over a long span, and only as good as the battens you cannot see.

What is inside it, and how to inspect it

Strips of softwood, typically 20–30 mm wide, are edge-glued into a slab and faced with one or two veneers on each side. The quality variables are all internal, which is why a cut corner tells you more than a brochure.

  • Batten gaps. Look at a cut edge. Battens should touch along their whole length. Gaps mean voids, and a void under a screw is a fixing that fails.
  • Batten width consistency. Wide, irregular battens telegraph through a thin face veneer as faint ridges under a gloss finish.
  • Knots. A knot in a batten is a hard spot that will not plane or sand evenly.
  • Moisture content. Freshly milled battens that were not dried will shrink after the board is made, opening internal gaps within months.
  • Face veneer thickness. A very thin face means any sanding cuts through to the glue line.

IS 1659 is the Indian standard for blockboard. A board without it is a board you cannot argue about later.

Where blockboard beats plywood

  1. Long shelves. A 25 mm blockboard shelf spanning 1,200 mm with the battens running along the span will deflect noticeably less than 25 mm plywood, because the battens act as continuous ribs. This is the single strongest argument for the material.
  2. Flush doors. Lighter leaf, less hinge load, less warp over a 7 ft height. Almost every internal door in India has a blockboard or particle core for this reason.
  3. Wide table and counter tops. Lower weight for the same stiffness matters on a 9 ft dining table.
  4. Tall wardrobe shutters. A 7 ft shutter in 19 mm blockboard is a kilogram or two lighter than the ply equivalent, which the hinges appreciate over ten years.

Where it loses, and what Mumbai does to it

  • Edge fixings are a lottery. A screw may land in a batten, in a glue line or in a gap. For hinges and runners, use ply or add a solid lipping.
  • Cross-grain strength is poor. Orient the battens along the span, always. A shelf with battens running across the span sags more than plywood would.
  • Softwood core and borers. Untreated softwood is attractive to powder-post beetle, and coastal Mumbai humidity is ideal for it. Treated BWP-grade board only.
  • Water. Even BWP blockboard has a softwood core. It survives humidity; it does not survive a soaked edge. Keep it out of kitchen base units and vanities.
  • Telegraphing. Under high gloss, batten lines can show in raking light. For gloss work, face the blockboard with a 4 mm MDF skin first.

Care, life and BOQ wording

  • Seal all edges at fabrication; a raw blockboard edge exposes end-grain softwood, which is the fastest moisture path in the panel.
  • Expect 18–22 years from BWP-grade blockboard in dry internal use in a Mumbai flat.
  • BOQ: “Long shelves and table tops in 25 mm blockboard to IS 1659, BWP grade, hardwood-lipped on exposed edges, battens oriented along the span; preservative treated against borer.”
  • BOQ: “Hinge and runner fixings not to be made into blockboard edge; provide 19 mm hardwood or BWP ply lipping at all hardware positions.”
  • BOQ: “Boards to be cut and a corner sample retained for client inspection of batten gaps before bulk cutting.”

Frequently asked questions

Is blockboard stronger than plywood?+

Stiffer along the battens over a long span, and lighter. Weaker across the battens, and less reliable for edge fixings. For a 1,200 mm shelf, blockboard is the better board; for a kitchen carcass with hinges every 600 mm, plywood is.

Can blockboard be used in a kitchen?+

For a tall unit door or a dry shelf, yes. For base unit carcasses and anything under a sink, no — the softwood core is the weak point and BWP grading does not change that. We keep kitchens in BWP plywood throughout.

What is the difference between blockboard and flush door?+

A flush door is a finished product — a blockboard or particle core inside a timber frame, faced both sides, usually 32 mm thick and sized to a door opening. Blockboard is the sheet material. Most Indian internal doors are blockboard-cored flush doors.

Why do my blockboard shelves show lines under the polish?+

Telegraphing of the batten joints through a thin face veneer, made visible by a glossy finish and raking light. Prevented by skinning the board with 4 mm MDF before finishing, or by choosing a matt finish. Not correctable once polished.

Is blockboard cheaper than plywood?+

Slightly, at equal grade — roughly ₹100–125 per sq ft for 19 mm BWP blockboard against ₹110–165 for 19 mm BWP ply. The saving is not the reason to choose it. Span performance and weight are.
