The capacity arithmetic for a small wardrobe

What a 6 ft wardrobe holds in each configuration
ConfigurationHanging railFolded shelvesRealistically holds
6 ft, single rail, 7 ft high1,800 mm long hang2 shelvesOne adult, poorly
6 ft, split rail, 7 ft high1,800 mm + 900 mm3 shelvesOne adult, comfortably
6 ft, split rail, to ceiling with loft1,800 mm + 900 mm5 shelves + loftTwo adults, tight
6 ft + 2 ft corner return2,400 mm + 900 mm6 shelves + loftTwo adults, comfortably
6 ft to ceiling + bed storage1,800 mm + 900 mm5 shelves + 30 cu ftTwo adults plus seasonal

The jump from row one to row three is about ₹45,000 and roughly doubles the usable capacity. It is the best value decision in a small bedroom.

Palette for a wardrobe that should disappear

In a small bedroom the wardrobe occupies a third of the visible wall. Match it to the wall as closely as the finishes allow, and let a single mirror panel or a cane insert stop it reading as a blank slab.

  • Chalk #F2EFE9 — the wall
  • Off-white #EDE8DF — the shutters — as close to the wall as laminate allows
  • Pale cane #C5B69C — one 400 mm centre panel insert, for texture
  • Bright white #FBFAF7 — interior carcass, so you can find things
  • Graphite #2B2D2F — the sliding track and the internal hardware

Getting more out of six feet

  • Two-tier short hanging in one bay: rails at 2,050 mm and 1,050 mm. Shirts and trousers hang at 1,000 mm, so two tiers fit in the height one long-hanging bay wastes.
  • Top-hung sliding gear with a floor guide, not a bottom track. Bottom tracks jam with dust within a year. Expect ₹9,000–₹16,000 for good gear on a two-panel 6 ft run.
  • A pull-down hanger rail for the loft, at ₹6,000–₹11,000, which makes the top 600 mm genuinely usable rather than a place things go to be forgotten.
  • 550 mm internal depth, no less. With sliding gear taking 70 mm, that means a 620–650 mm external carcass. Cutting to 550 external to save floor is how shirts end up creased.

Costing a 6 ft small-space wardrobe

6 ft wide, floor to 2,700 mm with loft, two-panel sliding, ex-GST
ElementSpecification2026 Mumbai cost
Carcass and sliding shuttersBWP carcass, top-hung two-panel sliding, matt laminate₹96,000
InternalsSplit rails, five shelves, three drawers, shoe base₹28,000
Loft450 mm loft with a pull-down hanger rail₹18,000
Mirror panelOne full-height mirrored shutter panel₹14,000
LightingInternal LED strip with a door switch₹8,000

Total at this specification: ₹1,64,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Going from a 7 ft high wardrobe to full height with a loft adds about ₹32,000 and roughly a third more capacity. It is the first upgrade to make.

Three small-wardrobe mistakes

  1. Stopping at 7 ft. The 600–800 mm above becomes a dust ledge. Going to the slab with a loft is the cheapest capacity available in a small bedroom.
  2. Sliding shutters where hinged would fit. Sliding costs more, takes internal depth and only ever gives you half the wardrobe at a time. Use it when the floor demands it, not by default.
  3. One long-hanging bay across the whole width. It wastes 700 mm of height under the clothes. Split at least one bay into two short-hanging tiers.

Small wardrobes in Mumbai bedrooms

In an 85–100 sq ft Mumbai bedroom the wardrobe usually goes on the wall the door swings against, which is often only 6 to 7 ft long before it meets the window or the bathroom door. Where the wall is short, look for a corner return: a 2 ft return at 90 degrees adds a bay and costs about ₹48,000, and the corner itself can hold a shoe or bag column. Check the beam — most of these rooms have one dropping 200–300 mm, and if the wardrobe sits under it you lose that height from the loft, so design the loft depth around the beam rather than discovering it on site. And keep the carcass 25 mm off the wall if that wall backs onto a bathroom, which in a compact 2BHK it very often does.

Go to the ceiling, split the rails, and count before you build. Other directions for the same room: Minimalist wardrobe ideas · Indian traditional wardrobe ideas. For rates and scope, see Wardrobe cost calculator, or go back to all interior design ideas.

Frequently asked questions

Is 6 ft of wardrobe enough for a couple?+

Tight but workable if it goes to the ceiling with a loft, uses split rails, and the bed provides seasonal storage. Comfortable for one adult. For two, 8 ft is the point where it stops being a daily negotiation.

Does a mirrored shutter make the room look bigger?+

One mirrored panel out of two or three, yes — it reflects the window and adds depth. A fully mirrored wardrobe reflects the bed and the clutter, and in a small bedroom that reads busier, not larger.

Can a wardrobe be less than 600 mm deep?+

Only for folded storage or with side-hung rails, which halve the capacity. For normal front-facing hanging you need 550 mm internal, so 600 mm external hinged or 650 mm external sliding. This is the one dimension not to negotiate.

What about a corner wardrobe?+

A 2 ft return at 90 degrees adds a full bay for roughly ₹48,000 and uses a corner that is otherwise dead. The corner itself is awkward for hanging, so use it for a shoe column, bags or a pull-out accessory unit.
