Why the traditional construction works here
- Frame and panelA solid stile-and-rail frame with a floating panel inside it, jointed with mortise and tenon. The panel floats so the timber can move seasonally without splitting, which in Mumbai it will. A mitred, glued frame opens at the corners within two years.
- Jali where the clothes hangTeak jali panels with openings under 20 mm on the hanging bays, and solid panels with internal dust liners on the folded bays. Air moves through the carcass, which is the single biggest protection against mildew in a coastal flat.
- Lined interiorsA cedar-lined bay for woollens and silk, which deters moths without naphthalene, and cotton dust liners behind the jali on folded-clothes bays.
- Brass hardware, solidCast brass handles, hinges and rails with SS 316 fixings. Plated brass on steel pits at the fixings in coastal air within two years, and the stain runs down the panel.
The traditional wardrobe palette
The timber is the palette. Keep the wall behind it light so the wardrobe reads as furniture against a ground rather than as a dark wall in a small room.
- Teak
#5A3720— the frames and the panels - Ivory lime
#EFE2C6— the bedroom wall behind - Brass
#B08A34— handles, hinges, the rail - Pale interior
#F6F2E8— the carcass inside, so contents are visible - Cedar
#7A6244— the lined bay for woollens and silk
Craft specification worth writing down
- Seasoned teak or sheesham at 8–10% moisture, with floating panels in mortise-and-tenon frames. Rigidly fixed wide panels split through a Mumbai monsoon cycle.
- Jali openings under 20 mm, set into a rebate in the frame, not pinned to the face. A surface-applied jali is decoration and looks it.
- Cedar lining or cedar blocks in the woollen bay, which works against moths and holds up in humidity better than any chemical alternative.
- Cast brass with SS 316 fixings. Mixed-metal fixings on brass corrode galvanically, and in a sea-facing flat that shows within a year.
What a traditional wardrobe costs
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Carcass and shutters | Seasoned teak frame-and-panel with jali on the hanging bays | ₹2,45,000 |
| Internals | Rails, shelves, three drawers, a cedar-lined bay, trouser pull-out | ₹48,000 |
| Loft | 450 mm loft in matching frame-and-panel | ₹32,000 |
| Brass hardware | Cast brass handles, hinges and rails with SS 316 fixings | ₹22,000 |
| Dust liners | Cotton or ply internal liners behind the jali on folded bays | ₹18,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹3,65,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. This is furniture rather than fit-out: it can be dismantled, refinished and moved, which a laminate modular wardrobe cannot.
Three traditional wardrobe mistakes
- Mitred, glued frames. Identical to jointed frames on day one and open at the corners within two years of Mumbai's seasonal movement.
- Jali on every bay. Folded clothes behind an open jali collect dust. Jali on hanging bays, solid panels with liners on folded ones.
- Plated brass. It looks the same in the showroom and pits at the fixings within two coastal monsoons, staining the timber below.
Teak wardrobes in a Mumbai bedroom
Three things to plan. Teak gains moisture through the monsoon and loses it by February, so every wide panel has to float in its frame and the run needs an expansion allowance at one end — a competent karigar does this without being asked, a production workshop often does not. Second, weight and access: a 9 ft teak wardrobe arrives as three or four carcasses and the largest may not pass a 2,000 × 800 mm lift door, so measure before the timber is cut. Third, the jali is doing real work in this climate: keep the wardrobe 25 mm off any external or bathroom-adjacent wall so air can actually move through, or the ventilation has nowhere to go and the advantage disappears.

Frequently asked questions
Is a teak wardrobe worth the extra cost?+
Over twenty years, often yes. It can be dismantled, refinished, moved and resold, none of which is true of a laminate modular wardrobe. The upfront cost is roughly 40–70% higher than a good BWP-and-laminate run.
Do jali panels let in dust?+
On hanging bays, negligibly — the clothes are on hangers and get worn. On folded bays it is a real issue, which is why those bays get solid panels with internal liners instead.
What protects clothes from Mumbai humidity?+
Ventilation first: jali bays, a ventilated plinth and a 25 mm gap at the back wall. Then cedar lining in the woollen bay, and silica sachets during August. Sealed premium joinery with no airflow is the worst combination.
Can traditional and modern wardrobes be mixed in a flat?+
Yes, and it often works better than a wholly traditional interior. A teak frame-and-panel wardrobe in the master with plain flush joinery elsewhere gives the main bedroom a focus without committing the whole flat.
