A budget wardrobe palette
Keep the shutters close to the wall tone so the wardrobe recedes. A budget wardrobe in a contrasting colour announces itself, and it is not the thing you want announced.
- Warm white
#F2EFE8— the bedroom wall - Oat laminate
#DCD4C5— the shutters, a half-step from the wall - White interior
#F9F7F3— the carcass inside - Oak laminate
#B99C74— one bay or the loft front, if any variation - Charcoal
#2A2C2E— the handles
Where the money must go
- MR ply at 18 mm with a BWP base rail and BWP anywhere within a metre of a bathroom wall. The hybrid saves about 20% and puts the moisture-resistant board where the moisture is.
- Branded soft-close hinges at ₹380–₹700 each. An 8 ft wardrobe with a loft takes about 18. This is ₹9,000 of the budget and the line that should not move.
- 0.8 mm matt laminate with a 2 mm PVC edge band. The 2 mm band is ₹18 per running foot more than 0.45 mm and it is the difference between a wardrobe that looks fine at year five and one that is chipped at every edge.
- A 32 mm routed ladder in the side panels, which costs almost nothing at build and lets you add drawers, pull-outs and dividers later without a carpenter.
A ₹1.44 lakh wardrobe, itemised
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Carcass and shutters | MR ply with BWP base, matt laminate, 2 mm edge band, branded hinges | ₹82,000 |
| Internals | Rails, five shelves on a routed ladder, two drawers, shoe base | ₹24,000 |
| Loft | 450 mm loft across the full width with separate shutters | ₹20,000 |
| Mirror | Full-length mirror fixed to the end panel or inside a shutter | ₹10,000 |
| Lighting | One LED strip in the main hanging bay with a door switch | ₹8,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹1,44,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. The routed ladder is the detail that makes this upgradeable. Drawers and pull-outs can be added at any point without touching the shutters.
Three false economies in a wardrobe
- Stopping at 7 ft. Saves ₹22,000 and loses about a third of the capacity, in the piece of furniture that holds the household's clothes.
- Unbranded hinges. Eighteen at ₹120 instead of ₹450 saves ₹6,000 and produces sagging doors by year two. It is the single most reliable way to make joinery look cheap.
- Particle board. Thirty per cent cheaper than MR ply and destroyed by one leak or one damp wall, both of which every Mumbai flat produces eventually.
Budget wardrobes in Mumbai
Two things push a budget wardrobe over. The wall behind it is the first: if it is external or shares with a bathroom, it needs a damp check and possibly treatment before the carcass goes up, which is ₹8,000–₹18,000 that has to be inside the budget. Ask for the check at quotation stage. The second is the working-hours constraint — 10am to 6pm with no Sundays turns a ten-day on-site carpentry job into fifteen, and on daily labour that matters. Factory-cut carcasses assembled on site cost slightly more in material and usually less overall, with far less dust for the neighbours. Whatever the budget, keep the 25 mm air gap at the back wall and the ventilated plinth; they cost nothing and they are what determines whether the wardrobe survives ten monsoons.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a basic wardrobe cost per foot?+
₹16,000–₹20,000 per running foot for full height with a loft in MR ply with matt laminate and branded hardware. An 8 ft run at ₹1.3–₹1.6 lakh. Quotations well below that are cutting the board grade or the hinges.
Is MR ply good enough for a wardrobe?+
In a dry bedroom, yes, with a BWP base rail and BWP wherever the run is near a bathroom wall. It saves about 20% over full BWP and puts the better board where it is actually needed.
Can I add internals later?+
Yes, if the side panels are built with a 32 mm routed ladder. Drawers, pull-outs, dividers and extra shelves all go in later with no carpenter and no damage. Ask for the ladder even if you are not using it yet.
Should I get sliding or hinged on a budget?+
Hinged, wherever there is 750 mm of clear floor. It costs about 15% less, loses no internal depth and gives you the whole wardrobe at once. Sliding is a solution to a floor problem, not a preference.
