What the tolerance costs and buys
- A single shutter line, floor to ceilingShutters running from a 10 mm floor shadow gap to a 10 mm ceiling gap, with the loft as part of the same grid rather than a box above. This is the difference between a wardrobe and a wall, and it is mostly about how the elevation is divided.
- Push-to-open with mechanical catchesNo handles, no gola, no groove. Mechanical push catches rather than magnetic-only, because a 2,700 mm shutter will drift with a magnet and the reveal stops reading.
- Workshop carcasses, CNC-drilledA 10 ft run assembled on site will vary by 3–5 mm across its length. Factory-built, CNC-drilled carcasses hold 1 mm. The premium is 12–18% and it is the whole point of the scheme.
- Lit interiors, because you cannot see inA handleless flush wardrobe with no visible bays needs its interiors lit on door sensors at 4000K. Without it you are opening an unlit cupboard twice a day, which is the practical cost of the aesthetic.
The minimalist wardrobe palette
The wardrobe should be the same colour as the wall, or one half-step from it. The interior should be as pale as possible for the opposite reason: you need to see what is in there.
- Bone
#F1EFE9— the bedroom wall - Greige
#E6E1D7— the shutters, a half-step down - Bright interior
#FAF8F4— the carcass inside, for visibility - Pale oak
#C3B6A0— one internal bay, if any wood at all - Graphite
#25272A— rails, hardware, the internal fittings
Where the money is going
- CNC-drilled workshop carcasses in 18 mm BWP, assembled on site to a set-out line. A site-built 10 ft run will not hold a 4 mm reveal.
- Mechanical push-to-open catches, not magnetic, on every shutter, with adjustable tension so the reveals can be trued after installation.
- 1 mm matt laminate or a matt PU finish, with the same material on the shutter edges. A contrasting edge band across a flush plane is the detail that undoes it.
- LED on door sensors at 4000K, CRI 90, inside every bay. With no glass fronts and no handles, the interior lighting is not decorative here, it is how the wardrobe works.
What a minimalist wardrobe costs
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Carcass and shutters | Workshop-built CNC-drilled BWP carcasses, flush push-to-open shutters | ₹1,95,000 |
| Internals | Rails, shelves, four drawers, trouser pull-out, accessory bay | ₹62,000 |
| Loft | 450 mm loft integrated into the same shutter line | ₹34,000 |
| Lighting | Sensor-triggered LED in every bay with concealed drivers | ₹22,000 |
| Mirror | Full-length mirror on a soft-close slide inside the run | ₹18,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹3,31,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. The workshop premium over site-built joinery is about ₹28,000 on this run. It is the line that makes the scheme work and the one most often cut.
Three ways a flush wardrobe fails
- Site-built across 10 ft. Reveals vary by 3–5 mm and in a scheme with no other detail that variation is the only thing anyone sees.
- A separate loft box. It breaks the plane into two objects and defeats the entire elevation. Integrate it into the shutter grid.
- No interior lighting. A flush, handleless, unlit wardrobe is a daily irritation. The sensor lighting is not an upgrade in this scheme, it is a requirement.
Flush wardrobes in Mumbai flats
Two local issues bear on the tolerance. Mumbai walls are rarely plumb and slabs are rarely level, so a flush run needs a set-out survey before the workshop cuts, and a scribe filler at each end to absorb the variation — which has to be designed into the elevation rather than added on site. Second, humidity: a sealed flush wardrobe with push-to-open shutters has no air movement at all, and in August that matters. Specify a ventilated plinth and a 40 mm rear gap behind the shelves, and keep the carcass 25 mm off any external or bathroom-adjacent wall. Without airflow, the most expensive wardrobe in this series will smell by September.

Frequently asked questions
Is push-to-open reliable?+
Mechanical push catches with adjustable tension are, and they can be trued after installation. Magnetic-only catches on a 2,700 mm shutter allow drift, which in a flush scheme is immediately visible.
Why does workshop joinery cost more?+
CNC-drilled hinge positions and machine-cut panels hold tolerances that hand-built site joinery cannot. On a 10 ft flush run that is the difference between a 1 mm reveal variation and a 5 mm one. The premium is 12–18%.
Do I need internal lighting?+
In a flush handleless wardrobe with no glass, yes. There is no other way to see into a 600 mm deep bay in a bedroom lit at 150 lux. Sensor-triggered LED at 4000K, about ₹22,000 for a 10 ft run.
How do I stop a sealed wardrobe smelling?+
A ventilated plinth, 40 mm gaps behind the shelves, a 25 mm air gap at the back wall and the habit of leaving it open for an hour a week. In a coastal city this matters more than the finish does.
