Four of six need no change at all, which is why this is the easiest of the eight directions to execute here.

The Scandinavian bathroom palette

High-key and simple: white tile, a pale wood tone and black. The grout colour is a real design decision here, because in a white-tiled bathroom the grid is the pattern.

  • White tile #F7F5F1 — walls, square or subway format
  • Grey grout #C9C5BE — the grid, deliberately visible
  • Pale ash #D9C8AE — the vanity front, in a wood-finish WPC or laminate
  • Off-white #EDEAE4 — the floor, in a small hexagon or square format
  • Matte black #25272A — tap, shower, towel rail, mirror frame

Specification for a humid climate

  • A marine-grade ply or WPC vanity carcass with a wood-grain laminate or veneer, not solid oak or pine. Solid timber in a Mumbai bathroom swells at the base and the shutters stop closing.
  • Epoxy grout in a contrasting grey. The grid is the pattern in this bathroom, so the grout has to hold its colour; cement grout goes patchy within two monsoons and ruins the effect.
  • Matte black fittings in stainless or PVD, not powder-coated MS. Painted steel chips at the handle and rusts at the chip, and in a bathroom that happens quickly.
  • Frosted or fluted glazing where the window is overlooked, which in a Mumbai flat it usually is. Daylight is central to the style and it should not be curtained away.

What a Scandinavian bathroom costs

40 sq ft bathroom, Scandinavian specification, full rebuild, Mumbai 2026, ex-GST
ElementSpecification2026 Mumbai cost
Tiling220 sq ft white square or subway tile with contrasting epoxy grout₹58,000
Vanity and mirror900 mm wood-finish WPC vanity with a solid-surface top, round black-framed mirror₹42,000
Sanitaryware and brasswareWall-hung WC, basin, matte black mixer set in stainless or PVD₹78,000
Civil and waterproofingStrip-out, membrane, ponding test, falls, screed₹52,000
Glass8 mm fixed panel with black channel and stabiliser₹28,000
Lighting and ventilationTwo side lights at the mirror, one ceiling fitting, timed exhaust₹22,000

Total at this specification: ₹2,80,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. This is the least expensive bathroom on this site by a clear margin, and most of the saving is in using white ceramic rather than stone or a seamless finish.

Three Scandinavian bathroom mistakes in India

  1. A solid wood vanity. It is the element every reference photograph shows and the one that fails here. Wood-finish WPC or marine ply gets the same look and survives.
  2. Cement grout. In a bathroom where the grid is the design, discoloured grout is the design failing. Epoxy, always.
  3. Open shelving with baskets. Damp, dust and a Mumbai monsoon between them make open bathroom storage a mildew problem. Closed drawers.

A Scandinavian bathroom in a Mumbai flat

The style suits Mumbai's smaller bathrooms because it needs no stone, no seamless finish and no expensive concealment. Two local notes. Daylight is central to the style and most Mumbai bathrooms have a small overlooked window; frost or flute the glass rather than covering it, because the alternative is a room that depends entirely on artificial light and the white tile then looks flat. Second, ventilation matters more in a white bathroom than a dark one, because mildew shows. A ducted exhaust at eight to ten air changes an hour on a run-on timer is inexpensive and is what keeps the grout looking new. Beyond that, this is the most forgiving specification here: everything in it is locally available and none of it requires a specialist trade.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this bathroom cheaper than the others?+

Because it uses ordinary white ceramic tile, a WPC vanity and a fixed glass panel rather than stone, seamless finishes or concealed cisterns. A 40 sq ft bathroom at ₹2.8 lakh against ₹3.3–₹4.6 lakh for the alternatives.

Can I have a wooden vanity in a Mumbai bathroom?+

Solid timber, no. Teak is the exception. For the pale Scandinavian look, use a wood-grain WPC or a marine-ply carcass with a laminate front, which cannot swell and costs less.

What grout colour with white tiles?+

A mid grey, in epoxy. It defines the grid, which is the point of the style, and it does not show the discolouration that a white cement grout will within two monsoons.

Is subway tile dated?+

It has been in continuous use for a century and is difficult to date. What dates is the layout and the grout: a running bond with a mid grey epoxy grout reads current; a stacked bond with a dark contrasting grout and a bevelled edge reads 2015.
