What modern actually means in a bedroom
- One plane, not a set of cupboards. Run the wardrobe wall to wall and floor to ceiling with a loft integrated into the same shutter line. Handleless J-profile or a 15 mm groove. A wardrobe that stops at 7 ft with a separate loft above is the builder solution and it reads as three objects, not one.
- The bed sits low. Mattress top at 450–500 mm rather than the 600 mm of a typical Indian bed with storage. Low furniture leaves more wall visible, which is the whole trick in a small room.
- Flat headboard, wall width. A 1,200 mm high upholstered or veneer panel running the full wall, not a bed-width board. It gives the room a horizontal line and hides the plug points.
- Nothing on the floor that does not need to be. Floating bedside ledge, wall-mounted reading lights, no dressing stool, no corner plant stand.
The modern bedroom palette
Bedrooms take lower contrast than living rooms because you see them at 6am and at 11pm. Two neutrals a step apart, one wood, and a single muted colour on textile only.
- Soft chalk
#F1EEE8— walls and ceiling - Sand
#DCD5C9— wardrobe shutters — a half-step from the wall, not a contrast - Warm walnut
#8A6A47— headboard panel, ledge, wardrobe handle groove - Slate
#4A5259— one accent wall behind the bed, if the room has daylight - Mushroom
#A8A093— bedlinen, curtains, upholstery

Specification that keeps it modern
- BWP ply carcass, 18 mm, with 0.8 mm matt laminate shutters. A matt shutter at 2.4 m high shows less waviness than gloss, and in a bedroom you are looking at it from 2 m away every morning.
- Soft-close hinges on every shutter, no exceptions. Hettich Sensys or Blum Clip-top. A bedroom door slamming at 6am is what gets a wardrobe rebuilt.
- Fabric-wrapped headboard in 32 mm ply with 25 mm foam, in a tight-weave upholstery, not buttoned or tufted. Tufting is a traditional signal.
- Two-way switched bedside circuit. The single upgrade people notice most, and it costs about ₹3,500 per point if the conduit is being run anyway.
What a modern bedroom costs
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe | 8 ft wide to ceiling with integrated loft, handleless, BWP and matt laminate | ₹1,25,000 |
| Bed | Queen, low profile, hydraulic storage, upholstered head | ₹68,000 |
| Headboard wall | Full-width panel, 1,200 mm high, veneer and fabric | ₹34,000 |
| Ceiling | Peripheral cove, 40 running ft | ₹28,000 |
| Lighting | Cove, two-way bedside circuit, wardrobe internal strip | ₹22,000 |
| Paint and finishing | Putty, primer, two coats, 380 sq ft | ₹18,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹2,95,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. The wardrobe is 42% of the total. That ratio is normal and it is where specification changes move the number most.
Three things that break a modern bedroom
- A mirror-fronted wardrobe. It doubles the room's clutter, not its space, and it is the single most common request we talk clients out of. One 400 mm mirror strip inside a shutter does the job.
- A false ceiling with a step and a drop light. Modern ceilings are flat or coved, never layered. A two-step gypsum ceiling in a 9 ft 6 in room costs you 200 mm and adds nothing.
- Overhead cabinets above the bed. Popular in small flats, unpleasant to sleep under, and structurally the shelf most likely to be over-loaded. Put that storage in the wardrobe loft instead.
Fitting it to a Mumbai bedroom
The standard Mumbai second bedroom is roughly 10 ft by 11 ft with the door in one corner, a window on the short wall and an AC point already drilled in the wrong place. Plan the wardrobe on the wall the door swings against — you lose nothing, because that wall is unusable for the bed anyway. Keep 600 mm clear on one side of the bed and 450 mm on the other; a queen simply does not allow both sides to be generous in this room. If the wardrobe shares a wall with a bathroom, insist on a 25 mm air gap and a damp-proof coat behind the carcass, or the back panel will bloom within two monsoons.

Frequently asked questions
How wide should a bedroom wardrobe be?+
For two adults, 8 ft of run at 600 mm depth is the working minimum, with a 450 mm loft above. Below 6 ft you are choosing what not to keep. Depth below 550 mm stops a hanger sitting square and is a false economy.
Is a false ceiling necessary in a bedroom?+
Only to conceal AC piping or to carry a cove. A peripheral cove at 250 mm wide does both for about ₹28,000 in a 110 sq ft room and costs you no usable height over the bed.
What is the best colour for a modern bedroom?+
A warm off-white on three walls with a muted slate or clay behind the bed. Avoid cool greys in a flat with limited daylight — below the sixth floor in most Mumbai buildings a grey room reads as a dull room by 4pm.
Should the bed have hydraulic storage?+
In a Mumbai flat, almost always. It adds 30–35 cubic feet for around ₹14,000 over a plain frame. Use it for luggage and seasonal bedding; anything you need weekly should not live under a mattress.
