The four places a luxury bedroom budget goes
- The wardrobe becomes furnitureVeneer shutters with slim aluminium-and-glass profile doors on the display bays, internal LED on a door sensor, velvet-lined jewellery drawers, pull-out trouser and tie racks. Hettich or Hafele internals throughout. This turns a storage wall into the most-used object in the room.
- A fabric-panelled headboard wallFull wall width, 2,400 mm high, in 40 mm panels with 25 mm acoustic wool behind a tight-weave linen or velvet. It absorbs the room, holds the bed visually and takes the concealed reading lights and switch plate.
- Layered, warm-dim lightCove on a warm-dim driver that shifts from 3000K to 2200K as it dims, two swing-arm readers, a wardrobe circuit and a low-level night circuit at ankle height. Four circuits, all dimmable, one scene keypad by the door and one by the bed.
- Drapery in three layersSheer, blackout and a decorative front curtain on a motorised track, with the pelmet formed as a pocket in the ceiling so no hardware is visible. This is the single most expensive square metre of fabric in most homes and it should be.
The luxury bedroom palette
Warmer and deeper than a living room, with tone carried by fabric rather than by paint. The wall colour should be the quietest thing in the room.
- Parchment
#E7DFD2— walls in a suede or lime-wash finish - Tobacco
#6B4F3A— veneer on the wardrobe and bed surround - Forest
#3E4A44— the headboard panel fabric, the bench - Old gold
#B99A63— hardware, the reading light bodies, one piped edge - Camel
#CBB9A6— carpet or rug, throw, the drapery front layer

Materials worth specifying by name
- Tight-weave linen or mohair velvet at 40,000+ Martindale for the headboard wall. Loose-weave linen sags on a vertical panel within a year in Mumbai humidity.
- Hand-tufted wool rug, 2,400 × 1,700 mm minimum, set so 600 mm of it sits under the bed on three sides. A rug that stops at the bed frame looks like a bath mat.
- Warm-dim LED with CRI 95 and a flicker-free driver. The cheap version of this is a 3000K strip on a triac dimmer, which strobes on camera and buzzes at low output.
- Solid-core flush door with drop seal and 32 kg/m³ core. A hollow bedroom door undoes every acoustic decision behind the headboard.
What a luxury bedroom costs in Mumbai
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe | 9 ft, veneer with glass profile bays, lit interiors, premium internals | ₹3,40,000 |
| Bed and bedsides | Upholstered king with wings, two veneer bedsides, bench | ₹1,85,000 |
| Headboard wall | Full wall, acoustic-backed fabric panels, concealed readers | ₹1,25,000 |
| Ceiling | Flat gypsum, shadow gap, cove, formed curtain pocket | ₹95,000 |
| Lighting and control | Four dimmable circuits, warm-dim drivers, two keypads | ₹78,000 |
| Drapery | 10 ft, three layers, motorised track | ₹72,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹8,95,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Carpet, art and the mattress are excluded. A good mattress at this level is ₹1.2–₹3 lakh and should be bought before the bed is built, not after.
Three expensive mistakes
- Buying a chandelier for a bedroom. You lie under it. A ceiling light you look straight into from the pillow is the most common luxury-bedroom error in Indian flats; put the money into cove and readers.
- Skipping the acoustic layer. Fabric panels without wool behind them are decoration. The 25 mm of acoustic infill costs about ₹9,000 across the wall and is the difference you actually notice at night.
- Gloss or mirror on the wardrobe. At this budget the wardrobe should read as furniture, and furniture is not reflective. Save the mirror for a framed full-length piece on the inside of a door.
What a Mumbai building does to this room
Two things govern. First, noise: a bedroom on a road-facing face in Andheri or Worli is sitting at 68–74 dB at night, and the fabric wall will not fix that on its own — you need laminated glass or a secondary glazed sash, which is ₹1,400–₹2,600 per sq ft and worth budgeting from the start. Second, humidity: a luxury bedroom is a room full of fabric and veneer, and a flat that is shut for three weeks in August will grow mould on the headboard. Specify a bedroom that can run a dehumidifier or keep the AC on dry mode, and never fix fabric panels directly to an external wall without an air gap.

Frequently asked questions
Is a walk-in wardrobe worth it in a Mumbai flat?+
Only above about 180 sq ft of bedroom, and only if the resulting sleeping area still holds a king bed with 600 mm both sides. Below that, a full-height fitted wardrobe with lit interiors gives you more capacity per square foot and costs less.
How much should I spend on bedroom lighting?+
₹70,000–₹1.2 lakh for a 130 sq ft bedroom at this level, including drivers and control. That is roughly 9% of the room, and it is the line item that changes how the room feels at 10pm more than any other.
Does a luxury bedroom need a false ceiling?+
A flat one, yes, mainly to form the curtain pocket and carry the cove and the AC. It should be flat with a shadow gap, not stepped. Stepped and layered ceilings with concealed rope light read as builder-luxury.
What upholstery survives Mumbai?+
Tight-weave synthetics and wool blends with a stain finish, or mohair velvet if the budget allows. Pure cotton and loose linen on a headboard will mark and sag. Ask for a 40,000 Martindale rub test figure and a cleaning code in writing.
