Where a luxury kitchen budget actually goes
- The island, and whether you can have oneAn island needs 1,000 mm of clear circulation on all used sides, which means a kitchen of at least 11 ft in the short dimension. Below that a peninsula does the same job honestly. A waterfall island in 20 mm stone with a mitred 100 mm apron is ₹2.4–₹4.2 lakh depending on the material.
- A single appliance wallOven, combi-microwave, warming drawer, coffee machine and the fridge behind matching fronts, in one tall run with a continuous shutter line. Integration is mostly carpentry tolerance: appliance housings have to be built to the manufacturer's cut-out within 2 mm.
- Internals from the top of the rangeBlum Legrabox or Hafele Matrix, Servo-Drive on the handleless banks, internal drawer dividers, a pull-out larder with independently opening trays. This is roughly ₹3,800–₹6,500 per running foot on its own.
- Ventilation designed, not boughtA 120 cm ducted hood at 1,800 m³/hr with a 200 mm smooth duct and the shortest possible run, plus a make-up air path. An Indian luxury kitchen that smells of last night's cooking has failed regardless of what it cost.
The luxury kitchen palette
Restrained and material-led. One stone with real movement carries the room; everything else is a quiet ground so the stone has something to be quiet against.
- Ivory lacquer
#E9E4DA— wall units and the tall appliance wall - Espresso veneer
#39332C— island body and the base run - Veined quartzite
#CFC6B8— countertops, waterfall ends and the full-height splash - Aged brass
#8C6E3F— tap, handles, pendant bodies — one metal only - Charcoal
#20262A— the sink, the hood body, socket plates
Materials and equipment worth naming
- Sintered stone or quartzite at 20 mm, mitred to 60–100 mm. Sintered surfaces take a hot vessel straight off the flame, which quartz does not, and they hold a waterfall mitre without a visible seam.
- Lacquered MDF fronts, 7–9 coats, or 0.6 mm veneer in matt PU. Both need a dust-controlled spray booth, and neither should be finished on site in a Mumbai monsoon.
- SS 304 undermount sink, 1.2 mm, with sound deadening, plus a separate 400 mm prep sink in the island if the layout allows two water points.
- A dedicated 20A circuit per major appliance and a 32A oven point, designed at first fix. Retrofitting appliance power into a finished stone splashback is not possible.
What a luxury kitchen costs in Mumbai
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Base, wall and tall units | 26 running ft, lacquered and veneer fronts, BWP carcass | ₹5,80,000 |
| Island | 8 ft, waterfall stone, seating overhang, prep sink, drawer bank | ₹3,40,000 |
| Built-in appliances | Oven, combi, dishwasher, hob, 120 cm hood, integrated fridge housing | ₹4,20,000 |
| Countertops and splash | 58 sq ft sintered stone, full-height splash, mitred edges | ₹1,90,000 |
| Hardware and internals | Blum Legrabox, Servo-Drive, larder, corner systems, dividers | ₹1,45,000 |
| Lighting | Under-cabinet, island pendants, plinth and internal drawer lighting | ₹65,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹17,40,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Add ₹1.5–₹4 lakh if the fridge is a side-by-side requiring a bespoke housing, and allow 10–14 weeks for imported appliance lead times.
Three ways an expensive kitchen disappoints
- An island with 750 mm around it. Below 1,000 mm, two people cannot pass and a dishwasher door blocks the route. The island then becomes a very expensive obstruction.
- Imported appliances without a service path. Check that the brand has a Mumbai service centre and parts before specifying. A built-in oven that cannot be repaired has to be replaced, and the housing is built to its exact cut-out.
- Open shelving in an Indian luxury kitchen. It photographs beautifully and holds a film of oil within six weeks. If you want the look, put it on the wall furthest from the hob and nowhere else.
Building this kitchen inside a Mumbai flat
Three site facts drive the programme. The stone arrives as slabs of 3,200 × 1,600 mm that will not fit most lifts, so the island top is templated and cut off site and carried in as two pieces with a mitre joint planned where you will not see it. Ducting a 200 mm hood line needs either an existing duct or society permission to core the external wall, and in a cooperative housing society that is a committee decision, not a site decision. Finally, lacquer and PU need low humidity to cure: schedule spraying outside June to September, or accept a dehumidified enclosure on site and the four or five extra days it adds.

Frequently asked questions
Is an island possible in a Mumbai kitchen?+
Only above roughly 100–110 sq ft with a short dimension over 11 ft, because the island itself is 900 mm and you need 1,000 mm clear on the used sides. Below that a peninsula off the end of the run gives you the prep surface and the seating without the circulation problem.
Are imported modular kitchens worth the money?+
The carcass and hardware, sometimes; the fronts, rarely. A BWP carcass built in Mumbai with Blum internals and lacquered fronts reaches the same daily experience for 35–50% less, and it can be serviced. Import the appliances and the hardware, build the boxes here.
How long does a luxury kitchen take?+
Ten to sixteen weeks from design freeze. Appliance lead times and stone selection are usually the critical path, not the joinery. Order the appliances before the joinery drawings are finalised, because the cut-outs depend on them.
What is the single best upgrade at this budget?+
Ventilation, then internals. A 1,800 m³/hr ducted hood and a full set of Legrabox drawers change the daily experience more than another ₹3 lakh of stone, and neither can be added later without dismantling the kitchen.
