The numbers that govern a small kitchen
| Dimension | Comfortable | Small-kitchen figure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aisle between runs | 1,100 mm | 900 mm | Below 900 mm a drawer blocks the aisle |
| Counter depth | 600 mm | 550 mm | Saves 50 mm of aisle; still takes a hob |
| Wall unit height | 700 mm | 900 mm to ceiling | Adds a full shelf of storage |
| Wall unit bottom | 1,500 mm | 1,400 mm | Reachable without a stool at 5 ft 3 in |
| Clear counter run | 900 mm | 600 mm | The minimum real prep surface |
| Sink to hob distance | 900 mm | 600 mm | Below this, splashing reaches the flame |
The aisle is the one number not to compromise. Everything else on this list can move by 50 mm; the aisle cannot.
Palette for a kitchen with no daylight
Most small Mumbai kitchens face a duct or a utility balcony and get very little direct light. Keep everything above counter height pale, and use one warm tone so the room does not read clinical under LED.
- Warm white
#F6F4EF— wall units, ceiling, the upper half of the room - Putty
#DCD6CA— base units, where marks show - Light granite
#EDE9E0— counter and a 600 mm splashband in one material - Honey wood
#9E6F45— one open shelf or the utility door face - Anthracite
#2A2D2F— tap, sink, handles and the hob — the only dark things
What earns its place in 42 sq ft
- A magic corner or a carousel — whichever the corner type takes. An L-corner takes a magic corner pull-out; a blind corner takes a carousel. Skipping it wastes the most expensive cubic foot in the kitchen.
- A 300 mm bottle pull-out beside the hob. It holds oil, masala and the things that otherwise live on the counter, which is the surface you cannot spare.
- Wall units to the slab with an internal shelf at 1,950 mm, rather than a separate loft. The seasonal cooker and the extra dabbas go up there and never touch the working kitchen.
- Granite rather than quartz on the counter. At 26 sq ft the saving is small in rupees but granite takes an edge better on short runs and does not need a template visit, which in a small flat saves a week.
Costing a 42 sq ft galley kitchen
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Base and wall units | 13 running ft, BWP carcass, laminate fronts, wall units to slab | ₹1,42,000 |
| Tall unit | 450 mm wide, full height, provisions and broom | ₹48,000 |
| Countertop | 26 sq ft granite at 18 mm with a 600 mm splashback band | ₹26,000 |
| Hardware | Magic corner, bottle pull-out, two vessel drawers, soft-close throughout | ₹34,000 |
| Lighting and finishing | Under-cabinet LED, one ceiling light, tiled splash above hob | ₹16,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹2,66,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Appliances are excluded. Budget ₹30,000–₹55,000 for a 60 cm chimney, a two or three-burner hob and a sink at this scale.
Three mistakes that cost you a small kitchen
- A tall unit in the middle of a short run. It cuts the counter into two useless pieces. Tall units go at the end of a run, against a wall, never between two working zones.
- Wall units that stop at 7 ft. The 600 mm above them becomes a dust ledge with three unused containers on it. Go to the slab and put a shelf in.
- Keeping the microwave on the counter. It occupies 500 × 400 mm of the only prep surface you have. Build it into the tall unit at 1,400 mm or wall-mount it on a bracket over the counter's dead end.
The Mumbai galley, specifically
Kitchens of 40–48 sq ft are standard in 1BHK and older 2BHK stock across Mumbai, usually with a window or door to a utility balcony at one end and the sink already sitting under it. Keep the sink there: relocating it in a galley means running waste along the floor under the base units, which you will regret the first time it blocks. If the utility door is at the end of the run, stop the counter 100 mm short of it and never put the tall unit there. Ventilation is the other constraint — most of these kitchens have one small opening, so a ducted chimney taken out through the existing window frame with a purpose-made panel is usually the only permitted route, and it works better than any recirculating unit.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum size for a working kitchen?+
About 35 sq ft with a single run, or 40 sq ft as a galley. The binding constraints are 600 mm of clear prep counter and a 900 mm aisle, not the total area. We have built genuinely good kitchens at 38 sq ft and poor ones at 70.
Is an L-shape or a galley better in a small kitchen?+
A galley if the room is under 5 ft wide, because two parallel 550 mm runs plus a 900 mm aisle fit exactly. An L if one wall has the door or window in it. A U-shape below 50 sq ft leaves a corner you cannot reach and an aisle you cannot turn in.
How much storage can a 42 sq ft kitchen hold?+
Around 1.6–1.9 cubic metres at this specification, which is enough for a family of four including seasonal items in the loft. Roughly a third of that comes from going full height and recovering the corner.
Can I have a dishwasher in a small kitchen?+
A 45 cm slimline unit fits under the counter in a 13 ft kitchen if you give up one base unit, and it needs its own 20A point and a waste connection. In most Mumbai galleys the honest answer is a countertop model in the utility balcony instead.
