What to keep and what to change
| Scandinavian convention | Why it exists | In an Indian kitchen | What we do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open shelving throughout | Display, light, informality | Collects oil vapour in weeks | One shelf, far from the hob |
| Pale oiled wood fronts | Warmth against white | Turmeric stains the oil finish | Sealed matt PU or laminate |
| White subway or square tile | Light, simple | Works, but grout discolours | Same tile, epoxy grout |
| Minimal wall units | Airiness | Loses critical storage | Full-height wall units, pale |
| Integrated handles or knobs | Simplicity | Works well | Keep, in matte black |
| Wooden counter | Warmth, cheap in Nordics | Fails on water and heat | Quartz in a pale wood-adjacent tone |
Four of six survive unchanged. The two that do not — open shelving and a wooden counter — are the two most photographed elements of the style.
The Scandinavian kitchen palette
Pale, warm and even. The whole scheme sits within a narrow light band with matte black as the only contrast, so the hardware choice does more work here than in any other style.
- Warm white
#F8F5EF— wall units, walls and the ceiling - Pale ash
#DED0B8— base units and the open shelf - Pale quartz
#EDE9E1— counter and a 600 mm splashband - Soft sage
#B6BEB8— one tall unit or the utility door - Matte black
#26282A— tap, handles, the single pendant
Specification for the Indian version
- Ash or oak veneer on BWP with a sealed matt PU, or a wood-grain laminate. An oiled or waxed finish looks correct and absorbs turmeric permanently; a sealed finish wipes.
- Pale quartz counter rather than timber, in a warm off-white. A wooden counter is a Nordic convention that does not survive an Indian sink or a hot vessel.
- Full-height wall units in the pale tone, not the half-height run the style usually shows. The storage matters more than the airiness, and pale units do not feel heavy.
- Matte black powder-coated hardware and tap, in stainless or aluminium. Painted MS chips at the handle and rusts; in a kitchen that happens in months, not years.
What a Scandinavian kitchen costs
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Base and wall units | 17 running ft, ash veneer or wood-grain laminate, BWP carcass | ₹1,95,000 |
| Counter and splashband | Pale quartz counter with a 600 mm splashband | ₹58,000 |
| Open shelf and tall unit | One 1,200 mm open ash shelf plus a 450 mm tall unit | ₹32,000 |
| Hardware | Magic corner, tandem drawers, soft close, matte black handles | ₹52,000 |
| Lighting | Under-cabinet strip and one matte black pendant | ₹28,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹3,65,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Appliances are excluded. This is the least expensive kitchen specification on this site and it does not look it, which is the argument for the style.
Three Scandinavian kitchen mistakes in India
- A wall of open shelving. In a kitchen that tempers mustard seeds daily, open shelves hold a film of oil within six weeks and everything on them has to be washed.
- An oiled wood finish. Turmeric penetrates oil and wax finishes and does not come out. Seal the wood or use a laminate.
- A wooden counter. It is the most photographed element of the style and the least survivable next to an Indian sink. Use quartz in a warm tone.
Making it work in a Mumbai kitchen
The style's low cost is its real advantage here, and it comes from using veneer or laminate rather than PU or acrylic, and from needing no stone feature. Two Mumbai adjustments. First, humidity and steam: a Mumbai kitchen runs at high humidity with a pressure cooker going, so a stable BWP core and a sealed finish matter more than the species. Second, ventilation: the pale palette shows discolouration from oil vapour faster than a dark kitchen does, so an adequately sized ducted hood is not only about air quality here, it is about the finish lasting. Budget the 90 cm ducted hood rather than the 60 cm, and clean the filters monthly — on a pale kitchen the consequence of not doing so is visible.
Keep the palette, seal the wood, and lose the open shelves. Other directions for the same room: Budget kitchen ideas · Luxury kitchen ideas. For rates and scope, see Modular kitchen cost in Mumbai, or go back to all interior design ideas.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a Scandinavian kitchen cheaper?+
Because it uses veneer or laminate rather than PU, acrylic or lacquer, needs no stone feature wall, and keeps the forms simple. A 65 sq ft kitchen at ₹3.65 lakh against ₹4.7–₹5.3 lakh for a modern or contemporary equivalent.
Is open shelving ever workable in an Indian kitchen?+
One shelf, on the wall furthest from the hob, holding things you use daily so they do not sit long enough to film over. A wall of open shelving in a kitchen that tempers spices is a cleaning commitment most households abandon.
Does pale wood stain?+
An oiled or waxed finish does, permanently, from turmeric. A sealed matt PU or a wood-grain laminate does not. Specify the finish, not just the species.
What counter goes with pale wood units?+
A warm off-white quartz, or a pale grey with minimal veining. Avoid stark white, which makes the ash look yellow, and avoid timber counters entirely in an Indian kitchen.
