The contemporary kitchen vocabulary
A curved run end
The exposed end of the base run or peninsula finished with a 200–300 mm radius rather than a square return, with the counter following it. It costs ₹28,000–₹45,000 including the stone template and it is the detail that dates the kitchen to now.
Fluted or grooved fronts
Vertical grooves at a 32–40 mm pitch on the base units or the island face, in a matt wood-tone PU or laminate. Keep the wall units plain; fluting on both levels is too much in a room this size.
Stone with movement
A veined quartz or a sintered surface with real figure, used on the counter and taken up as a full-height splash behind the hob. In 2026 this is a feature rather than a background, which is the reverse of the previous decade.
Two metals and a pendant
Aged brass tap with matte black handles, or bronze with brushed steel, plus one decorative pendant over the peninsula or the sink. Kitchens used to be lit only functionally; they are not any more.
The contemporary kitchen palette
Warm and mineral. The base units carry a wood tone, the wall units stay pale, and the stone is allowed to be the loudest thing in the room.
- Warm oat
#F0EADF— wall units and the ceiling - Cinnamon
#8B6647— base units and the peninsula face, fluted - Veined quartz
#DCD3C4— counter and the full-height splash behind the hob - Olive
#6E7A67— one tall unit or the utility door - Aged brass
#A5854E— tap and the pendant, with matte black as the second metal
Materials worth getting right
- Curved end panels formed on a flexible MDF core, with a templated stone return. The stone has to be templated after the joinery is installed, which adds about a week to the programme.
- Fluted fronts in matt PU or a 1 mm laminate at a 32–40 mm pitch. In a kitchen, specify a groove depth of 8–10 mm rather than 12: deeper grooves collect oil and are harder to wipe.
- Veined quartz rather than natural marble for daily Indian cooking. The look is available in quartz now at ₹420–₹850 per sq ft and it does not etch from lemon, haldi or tamarind.
- PVD-finished brassware rather than lacquered. Lacquer on a kitchen tap wears through at the handle within two years of daily use; PVD does not.
What a contemporary kitchen costs
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Base and wall units | 19 running ft, fluted base fronts, plain wall units, BWP carcass | ₹2,35,000 |
| Counter and splash | Veined quartz, curved end template, full-height splash at the hob | ₹78,000 |
| Tall unit | 600 mm tall unit with an arched open niche and provisions storage | ₹82,000 |
| Hardware | Magic corner, tandem drawers, bottle pull-out, soft close throughout | ₹62,000 |
| Lighting | Under-cabinet strip, plinth light, one decorative pendant, dimmer | ₹44,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹5,01,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Appliances are excluded; a hob, a 90 cm ducted hood, a sink and a tap at this level add ₹80,000–₹1.6 lakh.
Three contemporary kitchen mistakes
- Deep fluting near the hob. A 12 mm groove 600 mm from a tadka collects oil and cannot be wiped in one pass. Keep the fluting to the island or the units away from the cooking zone, at 8 mm depth.
- Natural marble because the reference photograph had it. Every veined kitchen in a magazine is marble and every one of them etches. Quartz gives the same figure and survives Indian cooking.
- Curves on the wall units too. One curved element per kitchen. Curving the run end and the wall unit returns and the island makes the room read as a bathroom.
Contemporary detailing in a Mumbai kitchen
Curved joinery and templated stone both add time, and in a Mumbai society with 10am to 6pm working hours that time compounds. A curved run end means the stone cannot be cut until the carcasses are installed and measured, which adds seven to ten days to a programme that is already constrained. Plan for it rather than discovering it. The second note is about the peninsula: a contemporary kitchen wants one, and most Mumbai kitchens cannot give the 1,000 mm of clear circulation it needs on the used sides. Measure before designing; a peninsula that leaves 750 mm is a permanent nuisance in the room you use most. Finally, fluted fronts near an Indian hob need a wipeable finish and a shallow groove, or they become the part of the kitchen you dread cleaning.

Frequently asked questions
What is replacing white gloss kitchens?+
Warm wood-tone matt fronts with fluting or grooving, pale wall units, and a veined stone counter. White high-gloss acrylic is the clearest single marker of a 2012–2018 kitchen in Mumbai flats.
Is a curved counter end practical?+
Yes, and it is safer at a circulation pinch point than a square corner. It costs ₹28,000–₹45,000 including the stone template, and it adds about a week because the stone is cut after the joinery goes in.
Can I use veined marble in an Indian kitchen?+
You can, and it will etch from lemon and tamarind within months. A veined quartz at ₹420–₹850 per sq ft gives the same appearance with none of the maintenance, and it is what we specify for daily-cooking households.
Do kitchens need decorative lighting?+
One pendant over a peninsula or sink, on a dimmer, alongside the functional under-cabinet strip. It is a 2026 convention and it makes the kitchen usable as a social space in the evening, which a strip alone does not.
