What to cut in a kitchen, and what never to
| Item | Full spec | Budget spec | Saves | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shutter finish | Acrylic, ₹1,600/sq ft | Matt laminate, ₹880/sq ft | ₹38,000 | Take it |
| Counter | Quartz, ₹620/sq ft | Granite, ₹280/sq ft | ₹18,000 | Take it |
| Carcass | BWP 710 | MR ply | ₹14,000 | Do not — this is a wet room |
| Tall unit | 600 mm, ₹68,000 | Omit, add later | ₹68,000 | Take it, but plan the space |
| Splashback | Full-height stone | Tiles to 600 mm | ₹22,000 | Take it |
| Corner hardware | Magic corner, ₹24,000 | Plain shelf | ₹24,000 | Do not — it is real storage |
| Hinges and channels | Hettich or Blum | Unbranded | ₹12,000 | Do not |
| Chimney | 90 cm ducted, ₹28,000 | 60 cm filter-only, ₹9,000 | ₹19,000 | Do not |
Four of eight savings are refused here, which is a higher proportion than any other room. A kitchen is wet, hot and used constantly, and it punishes false economy faster than anywhere else in the flat.
A budget kitchen palette
A two-tone laminate kitchen with a good granite and a clean tile can look considered. What makes budget kitchens look cheap is usually the hardware and the edge banding, not the colour.
- Warm white
#F4F2EC— wall units and the ceiling - Deep sage
#556058— base units, where marks land - Black granite
#3C3D3B— counter and a 100 mm skirting on the wall - White tile
#EAE6DD— splashback to 600 mm, with epoxy grout - Matte black
#25272A— handles and the tap
Where the money must go
- BWP 710 carcass throughout. This is a kitchen; it floods from a sink leak eventually. MR ply saves ₹14,000 and does not recover from standing water, which BWP does.
- Branded soft-close hinges and drawer channels, at ₹380–₹700 each. A kitchen drawer cycles ten times a day. Unbranded runners in a kitchen fail inside two years, and replacing them means dismantling the drawer box.
- A magic corner or carousel, even on a budget. ₹18,000–₹28,000 recovers roughly a base unit's worth of storage from unreachable space. In a 55 sq ft kitchen that is not optional.
- 2 mm PVC edge banding on every exposed edge. ₹18 per running foot more than 0.45 mm and it is the difference between a laminate kitchen that looks fine at year five and one that is chipped at every corner.
A ₹1.92 lakh kitchen, itemised
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Base and wall units | 13 running ft, BWP carcass, matt laminate fronts, 2 mm edge banding | ₹1,28,000 |
| Counter | 22 sq ft granite at 18 mm with a 100 mm skirting | ₹24,000 |
| Hardware | Magic corner, two vessel drawers, branded soft-close throughout | ₹28,000 |
| Splashback and lighting | Tiles to 600 mm with epoxy grout, under-cabinet LED strip | ₹12,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹1,92,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Appliances are excluded and the chimney is the one not to economise on: a 90 cm ducted unit at ₹24,000–₹32,000 belongs in the budget.
Three expensive savings in a kitchen
- MR ply or particle board carcass. The saving is ₹14,000–₹22,000 and the cost is the kitchen, the first time a sink connection weeps for a week unnoticed.
- A filter-only chimney. ₹9,000 instead of ₹28,000, and it does not remove oil from the air. Every surface in the kitchen then carries a film, and the joinery finish ages in two years instead of ten.
- Skipping the corner unit. A plain shelf in an L-corner wastes about 0.35 cubic metres. In a small kitchen that is the difference between having enough storage and not.
Budget kitchens in Mumbai
Two local realities decide whether a budget kitchen works. The first is the existing services: in an older flat the sink waste, the gas point and the single 6A socket circuit are all in fixed positions, and a budget job should design around them rather than move them. Relocating a sink is ₹12,000–₹25,000 and a gas point needs the supplier, not the carpenter. The second is the chimney duct. Most societies permit an exhaust through the existing window with a purpose-made panel and refuse a newly cored external wall, so plan the hood position against that route before the joinery is drawn. Keep ₹20,000 of the budget for electrical: a modern kitchen with a chimney, a microwave, a fridge and a mixer on a 1990s single circuit is a genuine hazard.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest a good kitchen can be done for?+
About ₹12,000–₹15,000 per running foot for BWP carcass, laminate fronts, granite and branded hardware, so a 13 ft kitchen at ₹1.6–₹2 lakh. Quotations well below that are cutting the carcass grade or the hardware, and both come back.
Is MR ply acceptable in a kitchen?+
No. Below the counter especially, the carcass will see water at some point. BWP 710 costs about ₹26 per sq ft more and is the single most important specification in a budget kitchen.
Can I add a tall unit later?+
Yes, if the space and the electrical are planned for it now. Leave a 600 mm gap at the end of the run, run a 16A point to it, and add the unit when the budget allows. Retrofitting into a fully built run means cutting the counter.
Which hardware brands are worth it?+
Hettich, Hafele and Blum at their mid ranges. The difference against unbranded is roughly ₹12,000 across a small kitchen and it is the line between hardware that lasts ten years and hardware that lasts two.
