The contemporary dining vocabulary
A round or pill table
1,200 mm round for four, 1,600 mm for six, or a 2,000 × 1,000 mm pill shape. Round tables suit conversation and remove the corner that everyone bumps in a tight Mumbai zone. They need more floor than a rectangle for the same seat count, which is the trade.
Curved crockery joinery
A full-height unit with a radiused end return and an arched open bay, in a warm veneer or a fluted front. The arched bay holds glassware and is lit; everything else stays closed.
Stone with figure
Travertine, terrazzo or a veined quartz top, sealed. Travertine is soft, porous and marks — it is the right choice only if you accept that as patina. Terrazzo is tougher and equally current.
A sculptural pendant
One fitting with a shape rather than a linear bar, on a dimmer, at 750–800 mm. Alabaster, ribbed glass, paper or a ceramic form. This is where a contemporary dining room spends its decorative budget.
The contemporary dining palette
Warm mineral with a deeper wall behind the joinery. Because dining happens in the evening, choose the wall colour under lamp light, not daylight.
- Warm oat
#EFE7DA— walls and ceiling - Travertine
#C6B49A— the table top - Warm walnut
#8B6A4B— the crockery unit, fluted or with a radiused end - Olive
#6B7663— chair upholstery and the arched bay interior - Aged brass
#A5854E— the pendant and the handles
Specification worth checking
- Travertine sealed with a penetrating impregnator before use and re-sealed annually, or filled travertine if you would rather not see the pitting. Unsealed travertine takes a red wine ring permanently.
- Terrazzo in a cement or resin base, 20 mm, with a mitred edge. Resin terrazzo is lighter and less porous; cement terrazzo has better depth and needs sealing.
- A radiused end panel formed on a flexible core, not faceted. On a full-height unit the curve is at eye level and a faceted approximation shows.
- A dimmable driver rather than a triac dimmer for the pendant. Sculptural fittings with integrated LEDs flicker badly on cheap dimmers, which is visible across a dinner table.

| Bar niche | Arched niche with a stone shelf, concealed sockets and glass storage | ₹52,000 |

Three contemporary dining mistakes
- A round table in a rectangular zone. A 1,600 mm round table needs 3,700 mm square with pull-back. In a 2,700 mm wide Mumbai dining strip it does not fit, whatever the mood board suggests.
- Unsealed travertine. It is porous, soft and will mark from the first meal. Seal it, or choose filled travertine, or accept the marking as part of the material.
- A linear bar pendant. It was the defining dining fitting of the mid-2010s and it now dates a room instantly. One sculptural fitting instead.
Contemporary dining in a Mumbai flat
The round table is the element most often defeated by a Mumbai floor plan. Dining zones here are usually strips of 2,400–3,000 mm between the living room and the kitchen, and a round table needs its diameter plus 1,050 mm of pull-back on the used sides. Measure before committing; a pill-shaped top at 1,800 × 950 mm gives most of the same feel in a strip. Travertine is the second caution: Mumbai's humidity and an Indian meal are hard on a porous stone, and unsealed travertine will darken around the serving positions within a year. Seal it and expect to re-seal. Finally, if the crockery unit has a lit arched bay, keep it away from the kitchen door, because vapour reaching an open display bay means washing the glassware before using it.

Frequently asked questions
Is a round dining table better?+
For conversation and for a tight zone with a circulation corner, yes. For seat count per square foot, no — a rectangle always wins. A 1,200 mm round seats four in the floor area a 1,800 mm rectangle seats six in.
Does travertine mark?+
Yes. It is porous and soft, and sealed or not it will pick up a patina. Filled and sealed travertine resists the worst of it. If a pristine surface matters to you, use a veined quartz that looks similar and does not mark.
What pendant suits a contemporary dining room?+
One sculptural fitting — alabaster, ribbed glass, ceramic or paper — at 750–800 mm above the top, on a proper dimmable driver. Linear bar fittings and three-pendant rows both read as the previous decade.
How do I make a dining zone feel like a room?+
A rug sized so the chairs stay on it when pulled out, a wall tone one step deeper than the living area, and a light that is only for the table. Those three, with no partition, are enough to read as a separate space.
