What to buy and what to build
| Item | Build it | Buy it | Cheaper option | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dining table | ₹54,000 made to size | ₹28,000 readymade 4-seat | — | Buy, unless the size is odd |
| Chairs | ₹9,000 each | ₹3,500–₹6,000 each | Bench for two | Buy, plus a bench |
| Crockery unit | ₹46,000 wall-hung 4 ft | ₹32,000 readymade | Open shelves ₹9,000 | Build — wall-hung, sized to fit |
| Pendant | — | ₹4,000–₹12,000 | Plain shade ₹1,500 | Buy, and put it on a dimmer |
| Wall treatment | ₹42,000 panelling | — | Paint plus a mirror ₹12,000 | Paint and a mirror |
| Rug | — | ₹8,000–₹20,000 | Skip it | Optional, and skippable |
The crockery unit is the only item worth building, because the wall dimension is never a standard size and wall-hanging it recovers floor that a bought sideboard would use.
A budget dining palette
Paint and a mirror do the work that panelling would have done. A mirrored panel behind the crockery unit borrows light from the living room and costs a tenth of a feature wall.
- Warm white
#F3F1EA— walls, continuing from the living area - Muted green
#57665C— a single band or the wall behind the crockery unit - Oak laminate
#C8A87D— the crockery unit fronts and the bought table top - Warm grey
#A29889— seat pads and curtains - Charcoal
#26282A— the pendant and the chair frames
Where the small budget should go
- A 4 ft wall-hung crockery unit in MR ply with matt laminate and branded soft-close hardware, 450 mm deep, at 300 mm off the floor. Wall-hanging costs nothing extra and makes a small zone read larger.
- A readymade table from an established brand at ₹24,000–₹34,000. Check the top thickness, the leg fixing and whether the finish is a veneer or a printed foil; printed foil chips at the edge within two years.
- One pendant with a dimmable LED lamp, on its own switch. This is the ₹8,000 that makes the zone read as a dining area rather than a corner of the living room.
- A 1,200 × 900 mm mirror behind the crockery unit instead of panelling. It borrows daylight into a zone that usually has none, at about ₹10,000 fitted.
A ₹1.12 lakh dining zone, itemised
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Table | Readymade four-seater, 1,200 × 750 mm, veneered top | ₹28,000 |
| Crockery unit | 4 ft wall-hung, MR ply with matt laminate, branded soft-close | ₹46,000 |
| Seating | Two readymade chairs plus a 1,200 mm bench | ₹18,000 |
| Lighting | One pendant on a dimmer, wired on its own switch | ₹8,000 |
| Wall and paint | Zone paint plus a 1,200 × 900 mm mirror behind the unit | ₹12,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹1,12,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Phase it if needed: the crockery unit and paint first, table and chairs later. The pendant wiring has to happen with the paint.
Three budget dining mistakes
- Building a table. Readymade dining tables are the best value furniture in India. Build one only when the zone needs a non-standard size.
- A floor-standing sideboard. It occupies 450 mm of a zone that is also a corridor. Wall-hung storage holds the same and keeps the route.
- Printed foil furniture. A table or unit finished in a printed foil rather than laminate or veneer chips at every edge within two years, and it cannot be repaired.
Budget dining in a Mumbai flat
The dining zone in most Mumbai flats is also the route to the kitchen, so the first budget decision is dimensional rather than financial: measure the walking route with the chairs pulled out, and size the table to what is left. A 1,200 mm four-seater is right for most 2BHKs and a 1,500 mm table that blocks the kitchen door is a permanent irritation regardless of what it cost. The second point is the electrical: a pendant needs a ceiling point in the right place, and in a flat where the existing point is centred on the room rather than on the table, moving it means chasing the ceiling. Do it with the paint, budget ₹3,000–₹6,000 for it, and do not accept a pendant hung off-centre from the table because the wiring was there.

Frequently asked questions
Are readymade dining tables good value?+
The best value furniture category in India at the moment. ₹24,000–₹34,000 buys a solid four-seater with a veneered top from an established brand. Build only when the zone needs a size nobody sells.
Should the crockery unit be wall-hung?+
In a small flat, yes. It holds the same as a floor-standing sideboard, keeps the floor line visible and does not obstruct a zone that doubles as circulation. It costs nothing extra to hang it if the wall is solid.
Can I skip the crockery unit?+
You can, and most Mumbai kitchens then overflow. If the budget will not stretch, build a 3 ft unit rather than none; even that takes the serving dishes and the everyday glassware out of a kitchen that has no room for them.
What is the cheapest way to make a dining zone feel separate?+
A pendant on its own dimmer over the table, and a wall colour one step deeper than the living area. Together those are under ₹15,000 and they do more than a partition costing ₹40,000.
