What the budget is buying
A table that is one piece
A 2,400 × 1,100 mm top in a single stone slab or a book-matched veneer, on a sculptural base. At this length the top is the room's horizon line and a visible joint in it is what separates bespoke from assembled. ₹2.4–₹5.5 lakh depending on material.
A service edge
A 9 ft buffet and bar run with a stone top, a 24-bottle wine cabinet, concealed sockets and drawers for linen. It lets a dinner run without traffic to the kitchen, and gets used far more than the table.
Acoustic treatment that is not visible
Fabric-backed panelling on one wall, a heavy rug under the table, lined drapery and an upholstered chair back. Together they take a hard room from about 1.2 seconds of reverberation to under 0.6 — the difference between conversation and shouting.
A lighting scene, not a fitting
Chandelier on a dimmer at 15–30% for dining, a wall wash on the panelled side, two picture lights and a low buffet circuit. Four groups, one keypad, one scene called Dinner.
The luxury dining palette
Dining rooms are used after dark, so the palette should be tested under 2700K rather than daylight. Deeper walls read better at night and photograph better with a table laid.
- Champagne
#E6DDCD— ceiling and the cornice-free upper wall - Deep green
#333E3B— the panelled wall behind the buffet - Walnut

Specification that shows at a dinner
- A 20 mm stone top with a 60 mm mitred edge, or 0.6 mm book-matched veneer in matt PU over a 32 mm core. Both need a single slab or a single flitch; ordering in two lots is visible down the length of a 2,400 mm table.
- Chairs with an 8-way hand-tied or webbed seat and a 460 mm seat height, upholstered in a 40,000 Martindale weave. People sit in these for three hours.
- A wine cabinet with dual zones and a vibration-damped compressor, built into the buffet with 50 mm of rear ventilation. A wine unit in a sealed housing fails within two years.
- Lined and interlined drapery, floor to ceiling, doing as much acoustic work as visual. Unlined sheers look elegant and sound terrible.

Three ways a formal dining room fails
- A chandelier sized for the ceiling instead of the table. Fitting diameter should be about half the table width, hung 800 mm above it; a 600 mm fitting over a 2,400 mm table disappears.
- Hard floor, hard walls, hard ceiling. Eight guests in an untreated dining room produce a reverberant room that people leave early. The rug and the drapery are acoustic elements, not decorative ones.
- No power at the buffet. A warming tray, a coffee machine and a decanter light all need sockets. Two twin sockets concealed in the buffet cost ₹6,000 at first fix and cannot be added later.
Formal dining in a Mumbai flat
Very few Mumbai flats have a separate dining room; where one exists it is usually a 10 ft × 11 ft space carved between the living room and the kitchen passage, often with a beam across it and a column at one corner. Panel the column into the buffet run rather than fighting it. Check the service lift and the flat's entrance turn before ordering a 2,400 mm one-piece top — many have to be brought in as a two-piece with a planned mitre, or hoisted, and hoisting needs society permission and usually a Sunday. If the room shares a wall with a neighbouring flat's living room, the acoustic panelling earns its cost twice over.

Frequently asked questions
How big a table fits a 110 sq ft dining room?+
2,400 × 1,100 mm seating eight, with 1,050 mm of pull-back on the used sides and 900 mm against the buffet. That is the practical maximum; a ten-seater at 3,000 mm needs about 150 sq ft.
Is a bar unit worth building in?+
If you entertain, it is the most used element in the room. A 9 ft buffet with a wine cabinet and concealed power costs roughly ₹3.8 lakh and removes every trip to the kitchen during a meal. If you do not drink, build the same run as a service buffet with a warming drawer instead.
What lighting level suits a dining room?+
Around 100–150 lux on the table at dinner, from a dimmed chandelier plus a wall wash — roughly 20% of the level you would light a kitchen to. Fix the fitting on a dimmable driver rather than a triac dimmer, or it will flicker at low output.
Should the dining room match the living room?+
It should share a palette and a metal, and differ in depth. A dining room one or two tones deeper than the living room reads as a distinct space at night without needing a partition, which in a Mumbai flat is the only workable separation.
