The four decisions that make a kitchen modern and usable
- Flat slab fronts with a J-profile or gola channel. No handle, no shaker frame, no beading. An aluminium gola profile in the shutter's top edge is ₹420–₹700 per running foot and wipes clean in one pass.
- Drawers under the counter, shutters only above. Three drawer heights — 120 mm for cutlery, 200 mm for crockery, 320 mm for vessels. Deep cupboards with a shelf are where steel dabbas go to be forgotten.
- A full-height splashback in one piece. Quartz, sintered stone or a single 8 mm back-painted glass panel from counter to the underside of the wall units. Grout behind a hob in an Indian kitchen is a losing battle.
- A tall unit that holds the fridge, the oven and the provisions. 600 mm wide, full height, in the same shutter line. It is what stops appliances scattering across the counter.
The modern kitchen palette
Two tones, split horizontally: darker below where the wear happens, lighter above where the light needs to bounce. A wood accent on one tall unit keeps it from reading as a laboratory.
- Chalk
#F0EEE9— wall units and the ceiling — keeps a 9 ft kitchen from closing in - Deep slate
#3C4442— base units and the tall unit, where scuffs land - Teak laminate
#A47B4F— one tall unit face or the open shelf, for warmth - Bone quartz
#E4E0D7— countertop and full-height splashback, one material - Matte black
#1F2224— tap, sink, gola profile, socket plates
Specification for an Indian kitchen
- BWP 710-grade ply carcass, not MDF or HDHMR, below the counter. Mumbai kitchens flood from a sink leak at least once. BWP recovers; MDF swells and does not.
- Quartz at 20 mm with a 40 mm mitred edge, ₹380–₹720 per sq ft. It takes turmeric, lemon and hot vessels far better than marble and does not need sealing.
- Soft-close tandem-box drawers with a 40 kg dynamic load, Hettich Innotech or Blum Tandembox. A vessel drawer is carrying 25 kg of steel; the cheap runner fails at eighteen months.
- A 90 cm ducted chimney at 1,200–1,500 m³/hr, ducted through the wall, not a filter-only model. Recirculating chimneys do not remove oil from an Indian kitchen.
What a modern kitchen costs in Mumbai
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Base and wall units | 17 running ft, BWP carcass, handleless laminate fronts | ₹2,10,000 |
| Tall unit | 600 mm, full height, fridge and provisions | ₹68,000 |
| Countertop | 32 sq ft quartz at 20 mm, mitred edge, cut-outs | ₹54,000 |
| Hardware | Magic corner, carousel, tandem drawers, bottle pull-out, soft-close | ₹62,000 |
| Splashback and lighting | Full-height back-painted glass, under-cabinet LED strip | ₹28,000 |
| Sink and appliances | SS 304 single bowl, pull-out tap, 4-burner hob, 90 cm chimney | ₹46,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹4,68,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Hardware is 13% of the total here. Cutting it is the most common false economy in a modular kitchen quotation.
Three modern-kitchen mistakes in Indian homes
- High-gloss acrylic on base units. It shows every fingerprint at hip height and scratches from a ring or a belt buckle. Keep gloss above the counter if you want it at all.
- Marble on the counter. Modern kitchens photograph well in marble and live badly in it. Lemon and haldi etch it within a month of real Indian cooking.
- An undersized chimney set too high. 60 cm over a 4-burner hob, mounted at 800 mm, does nothing. 90 cm at 650–700 mm above the hob, ducted, is the working specification.
Mumbai kitchen realities
Mumbai kitchens come with a fixed sink position, a fixed gas line and usually a utility balcony off one end. Moving the sink means re-grading the waste line under the counter, which is possible up to about 1.2 m and gets unreliable beyond; moving the gas point needs the supplier, not your carpenter. Most societies also require chimney ducting to go through the existing duct or window, not a newly cored external wall, so confirm that before the design is frozen. And plan the utility door swing: a 600 mm tall unit at the end of the run will stop the balcony door opening, which is the single most common clash we redraw.

Frequently asked questions
Is a handleless kitchen harder to keep clean?+
The opposite. A gola or J-profile has one open channel that wipes in a pass, where a mounted handle has a bracket, two screws and a shadow behind it that collects oil. The one caveat is that gola channels need wiping weekly, not monthly.
What countertop is best for Indian cooking?+
Quartz for most homes — non-porous, needs no sealing, handles haldi and lemon. Granite if you want stone at a lower price and accept the seams. Marble only if you accept etching as patina. Solid surface scratches and is not worth it at Mumbai prices.
How much does a modern modular kitchen cost per running foot?+
₹2,100–₹3,400 per running foot for base and wall units at this specification, before the countertop, appliances and hardware upgrades. The 17 ft kitchen in the table works out at about ₹12,350 per running foot all in.
Should base units be drawers or shutters?+
Drawers, except under the sink. They cost about 22% more and they are the difference between using the back of a cabinet and forgetting it exists. Under the sink, keep a shutter and a pull-out bin.
