The only item worth building at full cost is the wardrobe, because it is the one thing in this room that should still be working in 2040.
A budget children's palette
Washable paint in two tones, and every bit of colour on things that can be replaced for a few hundred rupees. This is also the approach that lasts longest, which makes it the rare case where the cheap answer is also the right one.
- Warm white
#F4F1EA— three walls, scrub-rated emulsion - Teal
#4F6E6A— one wall, repaintable in an afternoon - Oat laminate
#DCD3C3— wardrobe and desk - Ochre
#E0A64B— bedding, storage boxes, the cork board frame - Charcoal
#2A2C2E— handles and the task light
Where the money should go
- MR ply with BWP at the base for the wardrobe, matt laminate, 2 mm edge banding. The 2 mm band is the detail that matters most in a child's room, because every exposed edge gets knocked.
- Branded soft-close hinges and drawer runners. A child opens a drawer harder than an adult does. Unbranded runners in a child's room fail in about a year.
- Scrub-rated washable emulsion, not standard interior matt. ₹12,000 against ₹8,000 for a 90 sq ft room, and it is the difference between wiping crayon off and repainting.
- A wall-fixed 1,200 mm desk at 750 mm height on concealed brackets, which costs ₹22,000, frees the whole footwell and still works when the child is seventeen.
A ₹1.36 lakh children's room, itemised
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe | 6 ft to ceiling with loft, MR ply, matt laminate, branded hardware | ₹64,000 |
| Bed | Readymade single with storage drawers | ₹28,000 |
| Desk and shelves | 1,200 mm wall-fixed desk plus two floating shelves and a cork board | ₹22,000 |
| Lighting | Surface cove profile, a task light at the desk, a night light | ₹10,000 |
| Paint | Scrub-rated washable emulsion, three walls plus one accent | ₹12,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹1,36,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Everything except the bed should still be in use in ten years, which is the only sensible measure of value in a children's room.
Three ways money is wasted in a children's room
- Themed joinery. ₹45,000 or more for a car bed or a castle wardrobe with a four-year life, no resale and no way to reface it. The theme belongs in the bedding.
- A child-height desk. It costs the same as an adult-height one and is obsolete in three years. Build at 750 mm and buy an adjustable chair and a footrest.
- A false ceiling. ₹22,000 to lose 150 mm of height in a room where a loft bed might later be useful. Skip it entirely.
Budget children's rooms in Mumbai
Two local points decide the budget. First, the second bedroom in most Mumbai flats sits against a duct or a shared wall, and both are common damp locations; a ₹9,000 damp treatment before the wardrobe goes up is far cheaper than a ruined carcass and mouldy uniforms in year two. Ask for the check. Second, this room usually absorbs the household's overflow storage, so the wardrobe loft is doing more work than it appears — which is why stopping the wardrobe at 7 ft to save ₹18,000 is a worse decision here than in the master. Beyond that, budget ₹6,000–₹12,000 to move the AC point if it currently blows directly over the study desk, which in these rooms it very often does.

Frequently asked questions
Should I build a themed children's room?+
No. It costs ₹45,000 or more, has a four-year useful life, cannot be refaced and has no resale value. A neutral room with themed bedding achieves the same thing for ₹4,000 and changes whenever the child does.
What is the minimum for a proper children's room?+
About ₹1.2–₹1.5 lakh for 90–100 sq ft: a 6 ft full-height wardrobe, a readymade storage bed, a wall-fixed desk, washable paint and decent lighting. Below ₹1 lakh something structural is being cut.
Is a readymade bed fine for a child?+
Yes, and better value than a bespoke one. A single with storage drawers at ₹24,000–₹32,000 from an established brand is sound. Check the drawer runners, which are what fail first in a child's bed.
What will need replacing as the child grows?+
The bed, the chair and the textiles. If the wardrobe, the desk and the shelving are built at adult proportions with adjustable internals, none of them should need replacing at all.
