The contemporary children's room

An arched nook

A 900–1,100 mm arched alcove formed in the wall or built as a joinery recess, with a cushioned base, a book ledge and a concealed reading light. It is the element children actually use and the one that dates the room to this decade. ₹45,000–₹85,000.

Radiused joinery

50–80 mm radii on every exposed corner of the wardrobe, desk and bed. It is a contemporary signature and, at child height, it is also the difference between a bruise and a bad one.

Warm neutral palette

Oat, clay, sage and a pale wood, with the brightness coming from books, bedding and artwork. Primary-coloured joinery dates within three years and cannot be changed cheaply; a neutral room changes with a new quilt.

A desk that grows

A 750 mm fixed desk with an adjustable shelf ladder above, so the room works at seven and at seventeen. The chair changes; the joinery does not.

The contemporary kids palette

Warm and soft, with one gentle colour. This palette photographs as a grown-up room and behaves as a child's one, which is the point.

  • Warm oat #F0E9DD — walls and ceiling
  • Soft clay #C9977C — the arched nook interior and the cushion
  • Warm oak #A67D55 — wardrobe and desk, with radiused corners
  • Sage #8B9C8A — one drawer bank and the curtains
  • Charcoal #2A2C2E — handles, task light, shelf brackets

Specification for a child's room

  • Radiused corners on a formed core, 50–80 mm, on every exposed joinery edge below 1,400 mm. Both a style choice and a sensible one in a room children run in.
  • An arch formed in block work or a 100 mm stud before plastering, with the reading light and socket set at first fix. A curved trim on a square opening does not read.
  • Low-VOC boards and water-based finishes with a two-week off-gassing window, which matters more in a child's room than anywhere else in the flat.
  • Washable emulsion at a high scrub rating on all walls, including inside the arch, which is the surface small hands touch most.

Three contemporary children's room mistakes

  1. A shallow arch. An arched opening needs 100 mm of reveal to read as one. Anything shallower looks like a sticker and the nook loses its point.
  2. Colour on the joinery. Sage wardrobe fronts are appealing now and hard to live with at fifteen. Keep colour on drawer fronts you can reface, and on textiles.
  3. A theme dressed as contemporary. An arched nook painted as a house with a pitched roof is still a theme, and it has the same four-year life as any other.

Contemporary detailing in a Mumbai children's room

The arch is the element the building decides. In a 150 mm block wall you can recess a proper 100–150 mm arch; in a 75 mm partition, which is what separates most Mumbai bedrooms, you cannot, and the nook has to be built as joinery standing forward of the wall. That costs about 400 mm of room depth, which in a 110 sq ft room is significant — check before promising the detail. Ventilation and off-gassing matter here too: a child's room finished in solvent PU and occupied three days later will smell for weeks in a closed, air-conditioned Mumbai flat. Specify water-based finishes and plan the handover two weeks before the child moves in. Finally, keep blackout drapery in the budget; April daylight at 6am wakes children an hour early.

Frequently asked questions

Are primary colours out of fashion for children's rooms?+

They are certainly out of fashion, and more usefully they date the room. A warm neutral scheme with colour in bedding, books and art changes with a ₹6,000 quilt rather than a ₹1.5 lakh refit.

What is a reading nook and is it used?+

An arched or recessed alcove with a cushioned base, a book ledge and its own light, usually 900–1,100 mm wide. In our experience it is the most used element in a child's room after the bed, which is not true of most designed features.

How do I make the room last past primary school?+

Adult-height desk, adjustable shelving, neutral joinery, and colour only on things that can be replaced. That combination takes a room from seven to seventeen without a carpenter.

Is curved joinery safer for children?+

A 50–80 mm radius on a corner at hip or head height is meaningfully better than a square laminate edge. It is a reasonable thing to specify regardless of whether the style calls for it.
