Modern kids room design ideas

Design the room for the eleven-year-old, not the four-year-old. Themed joinery is obsolete in four years; the wardrobe you build today should still be there at eighteen.

What to build permanent and what to keep loose

  • Wardrobe: permanent, neutral, full height. 7 ft wide with an adjustable hanging rail that starts at 1,200 mm for a small child and moves to 1,800 mm later. Two rails now, one rail plus shelves at fourteen.
  • Desk: permanent, at adult height. 750 mm top, 600 mm deep, 1,200 mm wide, with a cable grommet and a socket at desk level. A child-height desk is obsolete in three years; a good chair with a gas lift is not.
  • Shelving: adjustable, on a routed ladder. 32 mm pitch routed into the side panels so shelves move without a drill. This is the difference between a toy shelf and a book wall.
  • Bed: loose, replaceable. A 900 mm single with a hydraulic base now; a 1,200 mm bed later. Do not build the bed into the joinery, because the bed is the thing that changes.

The modern kids palette

Neutral where it is permanent, colour where it is not. The wardrobe should look as reasonable at sixteen as it does at six, which means the colour lives on one paint wall and in the textiles.

  • Soft white #F5F2EA — three walls and the ceiling, washable emulsion
  • Sand #E2DACE — wardrobe and desk joinery — the permanent, neutral part
  • Teal #3E6B63 — one paint wall, repaintable in a weekend
  • Warm yellow #E4A24A — pinboard frame, chair, storage boxes
  • Graphite #2F3234 — desk lamp, handles, the shelf brackets

Specification for a room that takes a beating

  • Washable emulsion at a minimum scrub rating, not a standard interior matt. Asian Paints Royale or Nerolac Impressions in a washable grade takes crayon and a damp cloth.
  • 0.8 mm matt laminate on all joinery, with a 2 mm PVC edge band on every exposed edge. 0.45 mm edge banding chips at knee height within a year in a child's room.
  • Soft-close on every drawer and shutter, plus anti-tip brackets on anything over 1,200 mm tall. A tall unit fixed to the wall is a safety item, not an upgrade.
  • A 1,200 × 900 mm pinboard in cork or fabric-wrapped board, which is where the personality goes, so the walls do not have to take tape and pins.

Three decisions parents regret

  1. Themed joinery. A car-shaped bed or a princess wardrobe is obsolete before the laminate has finished off-gassing, and it cannot be resold or reused. Put the theme in the bedding.
  2. A child-height desk. It fits for two years. Build at 750 mm and buy an adjustable chair and a footrest; that combination works from seven to seventeen.
  3. Open storage for toys. Open shelves mean the room is always visibly untidy. Closed drawers at child height and open shelves only for books is the arrangement that stays calm.

Kids rooms in Mumbai flats

The second bedroom in a Mumbai 2BHK is typically 95–110 sq ft with a window onto a duct or the neighbouring building, which means artificial light does most of the work at the desk. Put the desk on the window wall if there is any daylight and light it separately anyway at 500 lux. Watch the AC position: in a small room the unit usually ends up directly over the study desk, which is uncomfortable for hours of homework, and relocating it during the fit-out costs ₹6,000–₹12,000. If the room shares a wall with the living room television, a 25 mm air gap behind the wardrobe and a solid-core door will do more for homework than any amount of joinery.

Frequently asked questions

At what age should a kids room stop being a kids room?+

Around eight or nine the room becomes a study-and-sleep room and stays that way until they leave. That is why we build at adult dimensions from the start and let the soft elements carry the childhood.

Is a bunk bed a good idea?+

In a room under about 100 sq ft with two children, yes — it frees real floor for a desk. Above that it mostly costs headroom and makes bed-making a chore. Never put a bunk under a 9 ft slab with a false ceiling; the top bunk ends up with 900 mm of clearance.

How much storage does a child's room need?+

A 7 ft wardrobe with a loft, plus two 320 mm drawers under the bed, is enough through the school years. The mistake is building for the toys of today; toys leave, books and clothes accumulate.

What lighting does a study desk need?+

Around 500 lux on the desk surface from a dedicated task light at 4000K, on its own switch, plus warm ambient light in the room. A single ceiling light behind the child puts their own shadow on the book.
