The trade-offs, priced
| Decision | Full spec | Budget spec | Saves | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe finish | Acrylic, ₹1,500/sq ft | Matt laminate, ₹850/sq ft | ₹42,000 | Take it |
| Wardrobe carcass | BWP 710 | MR ply | ₹11,000 | Take it in a dry room |
| Wardrobe height | To ceiling with loft | Stop at 7 ft | ₹24,000 | Do not — capacity halves |
| Bed | Bespoke, ₹68,000 | Readymade with storage | ₹36,000 | Take it |
| Headboard wall | Panelled, ₹34,000 | Paint plus cushions | ₹31,000 | Take it |
| False ceiling | Cove, ₹28,000 | Surface cove profile | ₹19,000 | Take it |
| Hardware | Hettich soft-close | Unbranded | ₹7,000 | Do not — fails in 18 months |
| Lighting | Three circuits, ₹22,000 | Two circuits, ₹12,000 | ₹10,000 | Partly |
Note the one row where the saving is refused outright. Stopping the wardrobe at 7 ft saves ₹24,000 and costs about a third of the storage, which in a Mumbai flat is the worst trade on the table.
A budget bedroom palette
Paint does the work. Two tones and a good curtain fabric change a bedroom more than ₹60,000 of joinery, and both can be redone in a weekend when you tire of them.
- Warm white
#F3F0E9— three walls, washable emulsion - Muted green
#5D6E66— the wall behind the bed, one coat of feature colour - Oat laminate
#DCD4C6— wardrobe shutters - Warm grey
#A1978A— curtains and bedlinen - Charcoal
#2A2C2D— handles, the curtain rod, two wall readers

Where the money has to go
- MR ply at 18 mm for the carcass, BWP for the bottom 150 mm and any wall shared with a bathroom. This hybrid is what a good carpenter does anyway and it saves about 20% over full BWP.
- Branded soft-close hinges at ₹380–₹700 each. A 9 ft wardrobe needs about 18 of them. This is ₹9,000 of the budget and it is the difference between a wardrobe that works in year five and one that does not.
- 0.8 mm matt laminate on shutters with a 2 mm PVC edge band. The 2 mm band costs ₹18 per running foot more than 0.45 mm and stops the chipping that makes budget joinery look budget.
- Two lighting circuits: a surface cove profile and a two-way switched bedside pair. ₹12,000 total, and the two-way switching is the thing you will notice every night.
A ₹1.46 lakh bedroom, itemised
| Element | Specification | 2026 Mumbai cost |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe | 7 ft to ceiling with loft, MR ply carcass, matt laminate, branded hardware | ₹78,000 |
| Bed | Readymade queen with hydraulic storage | ₹32,000 |
| Lighting | Surface cove profile with LED strip, two-way bedside circuit | ₹12,000 |
| Paint | Washable emulsion, three walls plus one feature colour | ₹14,000 |
| Curtains and mirror | Cotton-blend curtains on a plain rod, one 1,600 mm wall mirror | ₹10,000 |
Total at this specification: ₹1,46,000 ex-GST. Add 18% GST. Phase it if needed: wardrobe and paint first, bed and curtains later. The lighting has to happen with the paint, because it involves chasing.
Three false economies in a budget bedroom
- Stopping the wardrobe at 7 ft. It saves ₹24,000 and costs a third of the capacity. In a Mumbai flat that storage has nowhere else to go.
- Unbranded hinges. Eighteen hinges at ₹120 instead of ₹450 saves ₹6,000 and produces a wardrobe with sagging doors by the second year.
- Particle board. It is 30% cheaper than MR ply and it is destroyed by one leak or one wet monsoon wall. There is no Mumbai bedroom where it is the right answer.
Budget work in a Mumbai flat
Two things push a budget bedroom over in Mumbai. First, the wall behind the wardrobe: if it is an external or bathroom-adjacent wall with any damp, it has to be treated before the carcass goes up, which is ₹8,000–₹18,000 that nobody budgets and everybody needs. Ask for a damp check before the quotation is accepted, not after. Second, society working hours — 10am to 6pm with no Sunday work is standard, and it turns a ten-day carpentry job into fifteen, which matters if you are paying daily labour. Factory-cut carcasses assembled on site cost slightly more in material and usually less overall, because the site days drop by half and there is far less dust for the neighbours to complain about.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a basic bedroom wardrobe cost?+
₹70,000–₹95,000 for 7–8 ft to the ceiling in MR ply with matt laminate, branded soft-close hardware and a loft. Below ₹60,000 something is being cut, and it is usually the hardware or the board grade.
Are readymade beds any good?+
Many are, particularly the hydraulic storage models from established brands at ₹28,000–₹45,000. Check the base board thickness and the hydraulic strut rating. A bespoke bed is worth it only when the room needs a non-standard size.
What should I never cut in a bedroom?+
Hardware, board grade and wardrobe height. Everything else — the finish, the headboard, the ceiling, the bed — can be reduced or deferred without consequence.
Can a bedroom be done in phases?+
Yes. Electrical and paint first, because they are disruptive and involve chasing walls. Then the wardrobe. Then the bed, curtains and mirror, which can be bought over the following months with no further site work.
