What is a sliding wardrobe?

Doors that run on a track instead of swinging out — the right answer in a narrow Mumbai bedroom, with one real trade-off.

When it is the right choice

A hinged shutter needs 600 mm of clear floor in front of it. In a 10 ft × 11 ft Mumbai bedroom with a bed against the opposite wall, that clearance often does not exist — the door will hit the bed frame. Sliding removes the problem entirely. It is also the better choice in a passage-width dressing area and anywhere a door would swing into a walkway.

The trade-off nobody mentions at the showroom

You can only ever open half the wardrobe. With two shutters, one bay is always hidden; with three, two thirds is visible at a time. That matters when you are looking for something and when a fitter needs access. It also means the internal layout must be planned so that no single item lives permanently behind a closed panel — which is a design decision, not a hardware one.

Where sliding wardrobes fail

  • Bottom-rolling tracks collect dust and hair, and in a Mumbai flat they jam within two years. Top-hung is worth the premium.
  • Cheap tracks are the most common wardrobe complaint we are called about, ahead of shutters, hinges and finish combined.
  • An out-of-level floor throws the whole run out; the track must be shimmed level, not follow the floor.
  • Shutters over 1,200 mm wide or 2,400 mm tall need a heavier track rating than most quotations assume.

Internally the planning is the same either way — hanging, shelving, drawers and a loft over. See wardrobe design, wardrobe costs in Mumbai and planning wardrobe internals.

Frequently asked questions

Is a sliding wardrobe more expensive than a hinged one?+

Yes, by roughly 15–25% — the track system costs more than hinges and the shutters need a frame. The premium buys floor space, which in a small Mumbai bedroom is usually worth more than the money.

Which sliding track system is best?+

A top-hung branded system rated well above the actual shutter weight. Bottom-rolling systems are cheaper and are the reason most sliding wardrobes start sticking. Ask for the brand, the model and the load rating in writing.

Can sliding wardrobe doors be mirrored?+

Yes, and it is the most common way to get a full-length mirror into a small bedroom without losing wall. Specify a safety-backed mirror bonded to the shutter, and expect the track rating to need upgrading for the extra weight.

How much space does a sliding wardrobe need?+

None in front, and about 100 mm of extra depth behind the opening for the track and the shutter overlap. Plan the wardrobe at 650–700 mm deep rather than 600 mm so hanging clothes still fit behind a sliding panel.
