Dimensions that make or break it

A U-shape below 2.4 m of room width produces a corridor you cannot turn in

Two corners, two decisions

Where an L-shape has one blind corner, a U has two, and solving both with magic corners adds ₹36,000–68,000. A cheaper approach that works well: solve one corner properly with a pull-out and treat the other as deep appliance storage — the mixer, the pressure cooker, the things you fetch once and put back. Alternatively, make one corner a full-height tall unit return, which removes the corner geometry entirely.

What the third run buys you

  • A dedicated prep zone that is neither the sink run nor the hob run — rare and genuinely useful in Indian cooking.
  • Space for a dishwasher and a washing machine without stealing counter.
  • Enough wall for a full bank of wall units plus a loft, which in a family flat can replace a separate store.
  • Short triangle legs: everything is within a pivot, which is why U-shaped kitchens feel efficient despite their size.

The one warning

A U-shape encloses the cook. In a Mumbai flat where the kitchen is small, hot and used for two to three hours a day, three walls of tall cabinets can feel oppressive and will block light from the single window. Keep the run under the window low, use a lighter finish on the wall units, and if the room opens to the dining area, consider dropping the third run to a peninsula instead. Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum room size for a U-shaped kitchen?+

About 2.4 m × 3.0 m of clear floor. Narrower than 2.4 m and the space inside the U becomes a corridor where you cannot turn with a hot pan, which is a safety issue as much as a comfort one.

How do you handle two corners in a U-shaped kitchen?+

Solve one with a magic corner or corner drawers and make the other deep appliance storage, or absorb one corner into a tall unit return. Fitting two premium corner mechanisms is possible but rarely the best use of ₹68,000.

Is a U-shaped kitchen good for two cooks?+

Only if the clear internal space exceeds 1.8 m. Below that, two people inside a U constantly cross each other. A parallel kitchen with a wider corridor handles two cooks better in the same floor area.

Does a U-shaped kitchen need more lighting?+

Yes. Three walls of cabinets block daylight and cast shadows on every counter. Under-cabinet profile lighting on all three runs is not optional here, and the general layer needs to be brighter than in an open L.
