Why it is so popular here
Builder flats give you a kitchen with a window on one wall and a door on another, which leaves exactly two walls to build against. The L also suits how Indian kitchens are used: a long prep run, a hob against the wall with the chimney duct, and an open end that lets someone stand at the threshold and talk to the cook without entering. The work triangle falls into place almost by itself, with the sink on one leg and the hob on the other.
The corner, which is the whole design problem
| Corner solution | Cost | Storage recovered |
|---|---|---|
| Blind corner, plain shelf | Included | Perhaps 30% usable |
| Carousel (half-moon) | ₹8,500–16,000 | About 55% |
| Magic corner, two linked trays | ₹18,000–34,000 | About 85% |
| Corner drawers (diagonal front) | ₹26,000–42,000 | About 80%, best access |
| Leave it out: 45° counter, no cabinet | Saves ₹12,000 | Zero, but no dead space |
Setting out the two legs
- Keep the longer leg for prep — 1.8 m of uninterrupted counter is worth more than two 900 mm stretches.
- Put the sink on the window leg if there is a window; it is the only part of the kitchen where a view is used.
- Keep 400 mm of clear counter on both sides of the hob, and never put the hob within 300 mm of the corner.
- If a tall unit is needed, put it at the open end, not next to the corner where it will block the corner shutter.
Against the other layouts
A parallel kitchen gives more counter in a narrow room and has no corner to solve. A U-shape adds a third run and two corners. The L is the compromise that works in the widest range of Mumbai flats, and it is the only common layout that connects well to an open-plan living area. Frequently asked questions
Is a magic corner worth the cost?+
In an L-shaped kitchen with one blind corner, yes. It recovers roughly 85% of a cavity that otherwise holds things you will never find, for ₹18,000–34,000 — about the cost of one extra base unit for considerably more usable space.
What is the minimum size for an L-shaped kitchen?+
About 7 ft × 8 ft of clear floor. Below that, the two legs are too short to give a working prep run and a single-wall layout with a tall unit usually serves better.
Where should the fridge go in an L-shaped kitchen?+
At the open end of the shorter leg, so its door swing does not block the triangle and someone can reach it without entering the working zone. Allow 50 mm of clearance around it for heat.
Can an L-shaped kitchen have an island?+
If the clear floor between the L and the opposite wall exceeds 2.4 m, yes — and the combination works well, with the island carrying prep and seating. Below that, a peninsula off the short leg is the better move.
