What is a wall unit?

The cabinet above the counter — and the one most likely to come off the wall if the fixing is wrong.

The dimension that decides usability

The gap between the counter and the underside of the wall unit should be 500–600 mm. Below 500 mm you cannot use a mixer on the counter; above 600 mm the top shelf becomes unreachable without a stool. The depth matters too: 300–350 mm lets you stand at the counter without your head meeting the cabinet, while the 400 mm units some suppliers push do the opposite.

Fixing: where wall units actually fail

A loaded wall unit weighs 40–70 kg. Mumbai flats are built with RCC frames and infill walls that may be solid block, hollow block, siporex or a drywall partition — and each needs a different anchor. Hollow block with an ordinary plastic plug will hold for a year and then pull out with the shelf contents. We drill and test, use sleeve or chemical anchors where required, and fix into a rail rather than four independent points. On a drywall, a plywood pattress is built into the partition before boarding.

Lighting under them

A wall unit puts your own shadow on the worktop. Under-cabinet profile lighting at ₹450–700 per running foot is the fix, and it should be wired at first fix, not added later with a visible cable. Aim for 300–500 lux on the counter.

Wall units, base units and a loft make up the three tiers of an Indian kitchen. See modular kitchen design for how they are planned together.

Frequently asked questions

How high should wall units be above the counter?+

500–600 mm. Use 500 mm if the cook is shorter and the top shelf matters; 600 mm if you use tall appliances on the counter. Consistency across the run matters more than the exact figure.

Can wall units be fixed to a drywall partition?+

Only if a plywood pattress was built into the stud wall before boarding. Retrofitting into gypsum board with cavity fixings will not carry a loaded kitchen cabinet. If the partition is already closed, the fixing must go back to the studs.

Are lift-up wall units worth it?+

Above a peninsula or where a swinging door would meet your head, yes. Elsewhere they cost ₹1,100–2,200 more per running foot than hinged doors for a mostly aesthetic gain. The gas stays also need replacing after eight to ten years.

Should wall units go to the ceiling?+

If there is no false ceiling, yes — it removes the dust gap and adds long-term storage. If a false ceiling is planned, coordinate the two so the unit finishes cleanly into it rather than stopping 80 mm short.
