What belongs on a useful one
- Three to five reference images, no more. Twenty images is a Pinterest board, not a direction.
- The actual palette with reference codes — paint shades, laminate numbers, stone names.
- Physical samples where they exist: a laminate chip, a veneer leaf, a fabric swatch, a tile.
- One or two hardware and lighting references, because finish metal sets a tone.
- A written note of what is being deliberately excluded — often the most useful line on the board.
Digital or physical
Digital boards circulate easily and are how most projects start. They also lie about colour: a screen renders a beige laminate differently on every device, and a warm grey looks cold on a phone. Before any material is ordered, the shortlist must be seen physically, in the flat, under both daylight and the intended colour temperature. We carry samples to site for exactly this reason — a laminate chosen in a showroom at 4000K frequently looks wrong at home at 3000K.
Where it sits in the process
| Stage | Output | What it settles |
|---|---|---|
| Brief | Requirements list | What the space must do |
| Mood board | Visual direction and palette | What it should feel like |
| 2D layout | Plan | Where everything goes |
| 3D render | Visuals | What it will look like |
| Working drawings | Construction set | How it gets built |
What it is not
It is not a design, not a commitment to specific products, and not a substitute for material selection. It is also not a place to resolve budget — a board full of Italian marble and imported hardware sets an expectation that a ₹15 lakh budget will not meet, and it is kinder to say so at board stage. Most studios include it in the design fee; where charged separately, it runs ₹8,000–25,000. See our process and how to brief your designer.
Frequently asked questions
Is a mood board worth paying for?+
It is usually part of the design fee rather than a separate charge. Its value is in preventing a much more expensive misunderstanding at 3D stage, when a redesign costs days rather than an afternoon.
How many images should a mood board have?+
Three to five, chosen deliberately. A board with twenty images has not made a decision, and it lets both sides believe they agreed on different things.
Should I make my own mood board?+
Yes, and include images you dislike as well — negative references are often more informative. Bring it to the first meeting; it shortens the brief conversation considerably.
Does a mood board lock in materials?+
No. It sets direction and palette. Actual specification happens later, with physical samples seen in your flat under your lighting, because screens and showrooms both misrepresent colour.
