Marine versus BWP: the real difference
Both are IS 710 and both use a phenol formaldehyde bond, so the glue line is the same. What differs is the core. A marine-grade panel must have a void-free core of approved species with no laps or gaps — which matters when water can reach the interior of the sheet through a cut edge that will never be sealed, as on a boat hull. In a fitted kitchen where every edge is banded and every cut-out sealed, that advantage is largely theoretical.
| Application | Correct grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen carcass, banded edges | BWP (IS 710) | Bond is the same; edges are sealed |
| Bathroom vanity | BWP or WPC | Splash, not immersion |
| Balcony joinery, exposed | Marine or exterior WPC | Driven monsoon rain, UV |
| Terrace pergola and decking substructure | Marine | Permanently exposed |
| Water tank enclosure, pump room | Marine | Standing humidity, splashing |
What the premium buys
Per square foot, marine sits ₹15–30 above BWP — call it ₹8,000–15,000 across a typical 2BHK of joinery. Spent on a balcony cabinet, a terrace bench and a pump-room door, that money does real work. Spread across internal wardrobes it buys a specification nobody will ever test, while the same sum in better hinges and runners would be visible every day for a decade.
The upsell
“Marine ply” has become shorthand for “good ply” in Indian sales conversations, and a premium of ₹15–30 per sq ft over BWP is routinely charged for sheets that are simply BWP. Across a 2BHK that is ₹18,000–35,000 for nothing. Two defences: read the edge branding, which will say IS 710 and, if genuinely marine, carry the marine designation; and ask why the specific location needs it. If the honest answer is “it is better”, it is BWP you want.
Where marine ply is genuinely right, use it without hesitation — a Bandra balcony cabinet or a terrace pergola will repay it. Elsewhere, put the money into hardware, which is where joinery actually fails. See monsoon-proofing your interiors and the materials guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is marine ply better than BWP?+
Only where water can reach the core. The glue bond is identical — both are IS 710. Marine adds a void-free core specification that matters for immersion and permanent exposure, not for a sealed internal carcass.
Is marine plywood waterproof?+
The bond is, and the core is selected to resist water ingress. That does not make a cut edge waterproof — even marine ply is sealed at its edges in boat building. Assume the same on site.
Should a whole flat be done in marine ply?+
No. It is a premium of ₹15–30 per sq ft over BWP for a benefit that only applies to exposed and immersed locations. Specify BWP throughout and marine for balconies, terraces and pump rooms.
How do I verify marine grade?+
The edge branding should carry IS 710 and the manufacturer's marine designation, with an ISI licence number. Inspect a cut end for voids and overlaps — a genuine marine panel shows a tight, continuous core.
