What IS 710 actually requires

The standard is not marketing. IS 710 specifies a glue line that survives 72 hours in boiling water, a minimum number of plies, permitted core species and preservative treatment against borer and termite. A genuine BWP sheet carries the IS 710 mark, the ISI licence number and the manufacturer's name stamped along the edge — not printed on a sticker. Ask for the mill test certificate on a large order; reputable brands produce it without fuss.

Branded BWP, Mumbai 2026, ex-GST
ThicknessRate per sq ftStandard use
6 mm₹58–85Back panels, drawer bottoms
12 mm₹85–120Shutters, partitions inside units
19 mm₹110–165Carcass sides, shelves, counters
25 mm₹150–210Long shelves, seating bases, counters

A 10 ft kitchen carcass in 19 mm BWP costs roughly ₹9,000–14,000 more in board than the same carcass in MR ply — against a kitchen that typically totals ₹2.5 lakh and upwards.

Where we insist on it

  • Every kitchen carcass, including the loft, not just the base units under the sink.
  • Bathroom vanities and any joinery sharing a wall with a shower.
  • Utility areas, washing machine platforms and balcony storage.
  • Whole-flat joinery within about 2 km of the sea — in Bandra, Juhu, Worli and Versova the salt-laden air keeps humidity high all year.

BWP, BWR and marine

BWR ply is a lower grade to IS 303 — moisture resistant, not immersion proof — and it is routinely sold as though the two were interchangeable. Marine ply is BWP with a stricter core specification for boat and exterior use; in most flats it is an unnecessary premium. Buying BWP and calling it marine is a common upsell, as is buying BWR and calling it BWP. The stamp on the edge settles both arguments.

Costs and grades are compared in full on our materials guide, and how to check plywood quality covers the site tests that take two minutes. For built joinery see modular kitchen design.

Frequently asked questions

Is BWP plywood worth the extra cost?+

In Mumbai, yes. The upgrade from MR to BWP across a whole flat adds roughly 3–5% to the joinery bill. Replacing one swollen kitchen carcass costs far more than that, and it happens with the flat occupied.

How can I check if plywood is really BWP?+

Look for the IS 710 stamp and ISI licence number branded into the edge, check the core for gaps by looking at a cut end, and take a 100 mm offcut and boil it for a few hours — a genuine phenolic bond will not open up.

Is BWP plywood termite proof?+

IS 710 requires preservative treatment, so branded BWP is borer and termite resistant, not immune. Treatment quality varies between brands, and untreated edges cut on site should be sealed before the unit is closed.

Can BWP plywood be used for shutters?+

Yes, usually in 12 mm or 19 mm with laminate both faces. For routed or moulded shutter faces, HDHMR or MDF machines better — but the carcass behind them should still be BWP.
