The direction that matters
Blockboard is not isotropic. Its strength runs along the battens, so a shelf must be cut with the battens spanning the gap, not across it. Cut the wrong way, a 19 mm blockboard shelf will sag under the same load that 19 mm plywood carries without complaint. Any carpenter who cuts blockboard sheets economically rather than directionally will produce a bookshelf that bows within a year — it is one of the most common avoidable defects in Indian joinery.
Where it beats plywood
- Flush doors: lighter than ply for the same stiffness, so hinges and frames take less load. Most Indian internal doors are blockboard-cored.
- Long shelves and counters: up to about 1,200 mm unsupported with the battens spanning, against 750–900 mm for ply.
- Table and desk tops: light enough to move, stiff enough not to dish.
- Large wardrobe shutters: less weight on the hinge line than a ply shutter of the same size.
| Type | Core | Rate per sq ft | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial blockboard, 19 mm | Mixed softwood | ₹75–95 | Interior, dry use |
| BWP-grade blockboard, 19 mm | Treated softwood, phenolic | ₹105–150 | Doors in humid locations |
| Veneered blockboard, 19 mm | Softwood + face veneer | ₹135–210 | Ready to polish |
| 25 mm blockboard | Softwood | ₹110–150 | Counters, wide spans |
What to watch on site
Look at the cut edge. Gaps between battens, knots at the joints or uneven batten widths mean the surface will telegraph — you will see the batten pattern through a polished or laminated face under grazing light. A good board shows tight, uniform battens of similar species. And like all board products, its edges must be sealed before it meets Mumbai humidity.
For carcass work we still specify BWP ply; blockboard's place is doors, spans and weight-sensitive shutters. See the materials guide, or home renovation where door replacement usually comes up.
Frequently asked questions
Is blockboard stronger than plywood?+
Stiffer along the battens for its weight, and weaker across them. Plywood is more consistent in both directions and much better with moisture. For spans and doors, blockboard; for carcass and wet areas, plywood.
Can blockboard be used in a kitchen?+
Only in a BWP-bonded grade, and only away from water. The batten core has end grain at every joint, which drinks moisture fast if an edge is left unsealed. It is not our choice for a kitchen carcass.
Why do flush doors use blockboard?+
Weight. A 35–40 mm door in solid timber or plywood is heavy enough to strain hinges and frames; a blockboard core gives the same stiffness at about two-thirds the weight, and takes a veneer or laminate face cleanly.
How far can a blockboard shelf span?+
Around 1,000–1,200 mm in 19 mm with the battens running along the span and a light load. Add books and reduce it to 900 mm, or add a front lip. Across the battens, treat 600 mm as the limit.
