Where you actually meet it
Flat-pack furniture, imported modular kitchen carcasses, office workstation screens and pedestals, and the internals of budget wardrobes. It is not a disreputable material — a European kitchen at a high price point is often built from high-grade moisture-resistant chipboard with excellent edge banding, and performs well for twenty years in a dry climate. The problem is the Indian combination: low-grade board, hand-applied edge banding and Mumbai humidity.
The failure mechanism
Chips absorb water and expand; the resin does not hold them back. A wetted edge swells to a visibly rounded profile, the laminate lifts, and the panel loses its screw holding. Unlike solid timber, it does not dry back — the expansion is irreversible. One dishwasher leak or one monsoon week with an open window is enough to write off a run of base units.
| Product | Rate per sq ft | Verdict for Mumbai |
|---|---|---|
| Plain particle board, 18 mm | ₹28–40 | Temporary work only |
| Pre-laminated, 18 mm | ₹38–55 | Wardrobe internals, dry rooms |
| Moisture-resistant (green core) | ₹58–80 | Acceptable for dry-area carcass |
| BWP ply, 18 mm, for comparison | ₹110–165 | The wet-area standard |
Edge banding is the whole game
With chipboard the substrate is only as protected as its weakest edge. 2 mm PVC banding applied by machine with hot-melt or laser adhesive seals the edge properly; 0.8 mm banding pressed on by hand with contact adhesive lifts at a corner within two years and lets vapour straight into the core. If a supplier cannot tell you which of the two they use, assume the second.
Our line on it
- Acceptable: wardrobe shelves and internals in a dry bedroom, office pedestal carcasses, back panels.
- Not acceptable: any kitchen carcass, any bathroom joinery, anything on a floor that may flood, anything within a metre of a plumbing riser.
- Non-negotiable if used at all: 2 mm machine-applied edge banding on every edge including hidden ones, and sealed screw holes.
Compare with MDF, which is denser and machines cleanly, and with blockboard, which is lighter and stiffer for long spans. The full ladder is on the materials guide; for built work see residential interiors.
Frequently asked questions
Is particle board the same as MDF?+
No. Particle board is bonded chips with a coarse core; MDF is fine fibre pressed to a homogeneous panel. MDF is denser, machines cleanly and holds a routed profile. Particle board does none of those things, and costs less.
Can particle board be repaired after water damage?+
No. The swelling is permanent because the chips have expanded and the bond has broken. The panel is replaced. This is the single biggest practical argument against it in a Mumbai kitchen.
Why do imported kitchens use particle board?+
Because high-grade European chipboard with factory edge banding performs well in a dry, climate-controlled home, and it is dimensionally very stable. The specification is not the same product as local commercial chipboard.
Is pre-laminated particle board good for wardrobe internals?+
Yes, for a dry bedroom it is a sensible economy — factory finished, flat and consistent. Keep the shutters and any carcass near a wet wall in plywood.
