How to use them
- Leave the base open. The pair you wear today never goes back inside a drawer, and designing for that is what keeps the foyer tidy.
- Ventilate the shoe bays. Perforated backs or a 1 in gap top and bottom; a sealed shoe cabinet in Mumbai is a problem within a month.
- Wall-hang at 6 in off the floor so the floor can be mopped without moving anything.
- Put a socket in the drop zone. It is where phones and keys stop being lost.
Three sizing rules
- Shelf depth of 1 ft 2 in takes a men's size 11 flat; 10 in only if the shelf is angled.
- Shelf height of 6 in for flats, 8 in for shoes, 14 in for boots. Adjustable shelves earn their cost here.
- Tilt-out drawers hold more per foot than shelves and take four inches less depth.

Frequently asked questions
How many pairs of shoes can a foyer unit hold?+
Twelve to fifteen in a 3 ft wall-hung unit with two tilt-out drawers, around 25 in a 5 ft unit with tall shelved storage, and about 40 in a 7 ft full-height wall including a loft for seasonal footwear. Tilt-out drawers hold roughly 30 per cent more per foot than fixed shelves.
Tilt-out drawers or shelves?+
Tilt-out for volume in a shallow depth: they need 10 inches against 14 for shelves. Shelves for boots, heels and anything that will not lie flat. Most foyers are best with tilt-outs for the bulk and one adjustable shelved bay for the awkward items.
Do shoe cabinets need ventilation?+
Yes, in Mumbai particularly. A perforated back panel or a 1 inch gap at top and bottom of each bay lets air move. A sealed cabinet full of damp shoes after a monsoon week is unpleasant and eventually damages the carcass from the inside.
Where should the bench go?+
Integrated into the unit at 1 ft 6 in high, at one end of the run rather than the middle so it does not block access to the storage. Five feet of foyer wall is enough for a bench plus storage; three feet is not, and the bench is the thing to drop.
What does a foyer unit cost?+
Rs 26,000 to 68,000 for a 5 ft unit with a bench and hooks at a premium specification, and Rs 55,000 to 1.4 lakh for a 7 ft full-height wall with a loft, coat closet and drop zone. Ex-GST, 2026 Mumbai.
