Asian Paints vs Berger: how to actually decide

At equivalent tiers these two are closely matched, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. The decision should be made on three things that have nothing to do with the paint.

Tier for tier, what we observe in Mumbai

Typical Indian retail bands we observe, 2026, ex-GST
TierAsian Paints bandBerger bandPractical difference
Economy interior emulsion₹110 – 200 / litre₹100 – 190 / litreNegligible on a ceiling
Standard interior emulsion₹220 – 340₹200 – 320Negligible in a bedroom
Premium interior emulsion₹340 – 520₹320 – 500Both adequate for most rooms
Luxury washable emulsion₹520 – 900₹480 – 850Choose by shade availability
Exterior emulsion₹300 – 750₹280 – 700Check anti-fungal claim on both
Wall putty₹22 – 40 / kg₹20 – 38 / kgInterchangeable in practice

These are market observations, not official price lists. Dealer discounting in Mumbai moves both figures more than the gap between them.

The three grounds on which to decide

  1. Colour system. Each manufacturer maintains its own tinting recipes. A shade code from one is a proprietary formula, and a competitor’s machine match will be a near approximation rather than an identical colour. If your designer specified from one fan deck, stay with it.
  2. Tier at your budget. The scrub rating you need in a corridor is a bigger decision than the logo. Buy the tier the room requires from whichever brand offers it within budget, rather than buying a lower tier of a preferred brand.
  3. Applicator familiarity. A painting team that uses one system weekly knows its coverage, its drying behaviour and its thinning ratio. That knowledge shows on the wall more than any formulation difference does.
  4. A fourth, occasionally: local dealer service. On a large job, a dealer who will deliver tinted material on a Saturday is worth more than ₹20 per litre.
  5. What should not decide it: a television advertisement, a warranty headline, or which brand the neighbour used.

Where the money actually goes in a painting job

On a 650 sq ft flat repaint at premium tier, material is roughly a third of the cost and labour and preparation are the rest. Choosing between two comparable brands moves a few thousand rupees; choosing between two coats and three moves considerably more.

Cost structure of a full-system interior repaint, Mumbai 2026
LineShare of a full-system repaint
Putty, two coats, sanded18 – 24%
Primer6 – 9%
Topcoat material, two coats28 – 34%
Labour, masking, protection32 – 40%
Scaffolding and site cleaning4 – 8%

A 650 sq ft 2BHK full-system repaint typically lands at ₹55,000–1,10,000 ex-GST depending on tier and how much preparation the walls need.

Specification discipline, which matters more than the brand

  • Coat count in writing. Two coats over a primed and puttied surface, three for a strong shade over white. A quotation without a coat count is a price, not a specification.
  • Moisture below 12% before priming, measured with a meter. Painting a damp Mumbai wall in August is the commonest cause of peeling within a year.
  • Alkali-resistant primer on fresh plaster that has not fully cured.
  • Shade approved on the wall, at 2 ft × 2 ft, viewed in daylight and under your own lamps, before bulk application.
  • Batch numbers recorded and half a litre of each tinted shade retained for touch-ups.

Where a genuine difference does show up

Having said that the decorative ranges are closely matched, there are two places where the choice can legitimately go one way.

  • Protective and industrial coatings. If the project includes exposed structural steel, MS railings near the sea or an intumescent fire coating, use the manufacturer whose protective system your applicator can actually source and has applied before. Keeping primer and topcoat within one system prevents adhesion failures.
  • Shade availability in the tier you want. A specific colour may exist in a premium washable tier in one range and only in a standard tier in the other. Buying a lower tier to get the colour is the wrong trade; switching brand for it is the right one.
  • Not a difference: headline claims about washability, coverage or anti-bacterial properties, which are close enough between comparable tiers to be indistinguishable in a finished flat.
  • Also not a difference: warranty wording. Read whatever the manufacturer offers, but do not choose a paint on it — the failures that occur in Mumbai are preparation failures and are excluded by both.
  • What we would never do: mix primer from one maker with topcoat from another to save money on one tin.

Verdict

Choosing between two comparable paint brands — Greenbox approach
SituationWhat we would do
Scheme specified from one brand’s fan deckUse that brand; matching across systems is imperfect
No colour constraint, budget-drivenTake the better tier from whichever brand quotes it within budget
Contractor’s team knows one system wellUse that system
Metalwork and railings near the seaWhichever maker’s protective coating system your applicator can source
Large job, multiple deliveriesDecide on dealer service
Two rooms, two brandsAcceptable room by room; never on one continuous plane

Our position, stated plainly: this is not a decision worth a week of research. Fix the tier, fix the coat count, fix the preparation, approve the shade on the wall, and then buy whichever of the two your painter knows and your dealer stocks. Greenbox holds no dealership or applicator arrangement with either company.

Frequently asked questions

Is one of these brands clearly better?+

Not at equivalent tiers, in our experience. Both are large manufacturers with full decorative ranges and competent products at every level. What varies visibly on a finished wall is preparation, coat count and the painter’s skill, not the formulation.

Can one brand match the other’s shade?+

Closely, not exactly. Tinting systems are proprietary and a machine match will be a near approximation. On a single accent wall that is fine; where two brands meet at a corner, the difference in ground and sheen will show.

Is Greenbox affiliated with either?+

No. We hold no dealership, franchise or applicator arrangement with Asian Paints, Berger or any other paint company, and we take no brand-linked incentives. We specify tier and system on merit and buy on the open market.

Which is cheaper?+

At equivalent tiers we usually observe a modest advantage to Berger, but dealer discounting in Mumbai varies more than the list difference. On a 2BHK the gap between the two at the same tier is typically a few thousand rupees — well inside the variation caused by an extra coat.

Should I use the same brand for exterior and metalwork?+

Keep the primer and topcoat within one manufacturer’s system on each element, because adhesion failures come from mixing systems. Across different elements you can use different makers freely. For coastal metalwork, choose whichever protective system your applicator can actually source locally.
