Categories that matter on an interior project
| Category | What it covers | Typical project use |
|---|---|---|
| Interior emulsions | Economy through luxury washable tiers | All internal wall finishes |
| Exterior emulsions | Weather and fungal resistant wall coatings | Balconies, parapets, external faces |
| Wood coatings | Melamine, PU and water-based wood finishes | Doors, timber joinery, frames |
| Metal and enamel | Synthetic and water-based enamels | Grilles, railings, MS frames |
| Protective coatings | Structural steel and industrial systems | Mezzanines, exposed steel in commercial fit-outs |
| Waterproofing | Terrace and wall coating systems | Leak remediation before finishing |
| Undercoats | Wall putty, primers, sealers | Below every system |

Open-market observations only. On comparable tiers we usually see a modest price advantage over the market leader, though dealer discounts vary more than list differences.
Where the industrial side is useful
Most decorative paint pages ignore this, but on commercial fit-outs it matters. A project with exposed structural steel, a mezzanine, an MS staircase or a plant room needs a protective coating system, not a decorative enamel, and a manufacturer with a real industrial portfolio can supply both to one specification.
- Exposed steel in a warehouse conversion or a double-height retail space needs surface preparation to a defined standard plus a primer and topcoat system rated for the environment.
- MS railings and grilles in a Mumbai building within 2 km of the sea corrode under ordinary synthetic enamel within three years. An epoxy or polyurethane protective system lasts considerably longer.
- Fire-rated intumescent coatings on structural steel are a specialist item, and specifying them from the same manufacturer as the decorative paint simplifies the submittal process with a landlord.
- For residential work none of this applies, and the decorative tier decision is the only one that matters.
Practical guidance for a Mumbai flat
- Do not mix manufacturers on one continuous wall or ceiling plane. Shade matching across brands is close but the sheen and the way the film reflects light differ enough to show at a junction.
- Approve the shade on the wall. A colour that looks warm on a card at a dealer counter reads quite differently on 400 sq ft of a north-facing Mumbai bedroom at six in the evening.
- Ask for the batch numbers of the tinted paint. If a wall needs touching up in month eight, a different batch of the same shade can show as a patch.
- On new plaster, allow the full curing period before painting. Fresh cement plaster is alkaline and will attack an ordinary primer; an alkali-resistant primer is the correct answer if the programme cannot wait.
- In the monsoon, keep painting to internal work and postpone balcony and external faces. A coat applied to a damp external wall in July will not last a year.
Our independence
Greenbox is an independent design and build studio. We hold no dealership, franchise, applicator agreement or commercial arrangement with Berger Paints or with any other paint manufacturer, and we accept no brand-linked incentives that would influence a specification. We buy from Mumbai dealers on the open market and pass through the invoice where we procure on a client’s behalf. The price bands on this page are what we observe in the market, not company figures.

Frequently asked questions
Is Berger cheaper than Asian Paints?+
At equivalent tiers we usually see a modest price advantage, but dealer discounts in Mumbai vary more than the list difference, so compare actual quotations rather than assuming. On a 2BHK repaint the difference between the two at the same tier is typically a few thousand rupees, well inside the variation caused by coat count.
Can I mix Berger and another brand in the same flat?+
Room by room, yes. On the same continuous wall or ceiling, no — the sheen and film characteristics differ enough to show at the junction. If different rooms use different brands, record which is where in the handover file for future touch-ups.
Is Greenbox affiliated with Berger Paints?+
No. We are independent, hold no dealership or applicator arrangement with any paint manufacturer, and specify on merit. Where we procure paint for a client we pass through the supplier invoice.
What should I use on metal railings in a sea-facing flat?+
Not an ordinary synthetic enamel. Specify proper surface preparation followed by a protective primer and topcoat system rated for coastal exposure. It costs two to three times as much and lasts several times longer, which in a Worli or Juhu flat is not a close decision.
How long should a good paint job last?+
Five to seven years internally in a Mumbai flat at premium tier with proper preparation, and three to five on balconies and external faces. If a paint job is failing at year two, look at the surface preparation and the moisture content at application, not at the brand.
