What vaastu asks for in a kitchen
Vaastu shastra is a traditional Indian system of spatial orientation with a long history in domestic building. A large share of our residential clients ask us to design around it, and we do — the same way we design around a preference for morning light or a family that cooks twice a day. We plan to it where the building allows, we say plainly where it does not, and we make no claims about what following or ignoring it produces. What follows is the practical version: which rules you can honour in a Mumbai flat, and which ones the plumbing stack has already decided for you.
The classical guidance treats the south-east as the fire quarter and puts the hob there, with the cook facing east while working. Water — sink, washing machine, water purifier — sits north or north-east, kept away from the hob. Heavy storage and the refrigerator go south and west. The north-east corner is kept light, low and uncluttered. Everything else in a vaastu kitchen conversation is a variation on those four ideas.
| Element | Vaastu preference | Reality in a Mumbai flat | What we do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen room position | South-east of the plan | Fixed by the wet stack; rarely changeable | Work within the room; orient the hob instead |
| Hob | South-east counter, cook facing east | Usually achievable | Plan the hob run first, then everything else |
| Sink | North or north-east | Often achievable if the trap can be re-routed within 1.2 m | Shift within the room; flag the slope limit |
| Refrigerator | South-west | Almost always achievable | Tall unit block to the south-west |
| Tall pantry / loft mass | South and west walls | Achievable | Load mass away from the north-east |
| Window | East or north | Fixed by the facade | Compensate with 4000 K task light under wall units |
| North-east corner | Light, open, uncluttered | Achievable | Open shelf or low counter, never a tall unit |
Nothing here overrides the fire, ventilation or gas-line requirements of the building.
Where the vaastu rule and the functional reason agree
Some of this coincides neatly with ordinary good kitchen planning, and when it does we say so — it makes the decision easier to hold when a trade-off appears later.
- Hob away from the sink. Vaastu separates fire and water; kitchen ergonomics wants 600–900 mm of clear landing counter between the two so you are not lifting a hot pan across a wet zone. Same placement, two reasons.
- East-facing window or east work orientation. An east aperture gives usable morning light between roughly 7 and 11 a.m., which is when most Indian kitchens do their heaviest work. That is a daylight argument, not a mystical one, and it holds.
- Refrigerator to the south-west, away from the hob. A compressor next to a four-burner hob runs harder and fails sooner. Keeping 450 mm and a tall unit between them is sound whatever system you are following.
- North-east kept low. In most Mumbai flats the north-east of the kitchen is where the window or the utility door is. Keeping it free of tall units preserves cross-ventilation, which matters a great deal in an 82% humidity monsoon.
Other rules have no functional counterpart — the direction you face while chopping, for instance. We follow them where they cost nothing, because they cost nothing, and we do not pretend they are engineering.

Design and build under one accountable roof
Hob, sink and the work triangle in millimetres
Once the directions are settled, the kitchen still has to work. These are the dimensions we hold on every Greenbox kitchen regardless of orientation, and the vaastu layout has to fit inside them rather than the other way round.
| Dimension | Minimum | Comfortable | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counter height | 850 mm | 900 mm | Add 50 mm for a cook above 5 ft 8 in |
| Counter depth | 600 mm | 650 mm | 650 mm if you use a 60 cm built-in hob |
| Hob to sink clear run | 600 mm | 900 mm | The landing zone; do not compromise it |
| Hob to any side wall | 300 mm | 450 mm | Fire safety and pan clearance |
| Aisle in a parallel kitchen | 1050 mm | 1200 mm | Below 1050 mm two people cannot pass |
| Wall unit above counter | 550 mm | 600 mm | Leave 700 mm above the hob for the chimney |
| Work triangle perimeter | 3600 mm | 4200–6000 mm | Above 6600 mm the kitchen feels like a corridor |
Colours that satisfy the guidance and survive the cooking
Vaastu colour guidance for a kitchen leans warm — reds, oranges, terracotta, yellow, and off-white as a neutral — with heavy black and deep blue generally avoided on the main shutters. That happens to align with what we would recommend anyway in a working Indian kitchen, where high-gloss white shows every turmeric splash and pure black shows every fingerprint.
| Finish | Reads as | 2026 rate, ex-GST | Wears how |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matte acrylic, warm off-white | Neutral, bright | ₹2,050–₹2,450 / sq ft | Excellent; wipes clean, no glare |
| 1 mm laminate, clay or oat | Warm neutral | ₹1,550–₹1,850 / sq ft | Very good; most forgiving per rupee |
| Matte PU, terracotta | Warm accent | ₹2,400–₹2,950 / sq ft | Good; touch-ups need the same batch |
| High-gloss acrylic, white | Bright, clinical | ₹2,150–₹2,600 / sq ft | Shows every splash within a week |
| Membrane, ivory | Soft, traditional | ₹1,250–₹1,500 / sq ft | Fair; edges lift near the hob after 4–5 yrs |
Add 18% GST. Rates are for shutter and carcass on BWP IS:710; counter, appliances and chimney are separate.
A workable scheme that satisfies both a vaastu consultant and a design review: warm off-white on the wall units to keep the upper half light, a clay or terracotta tone on the base units to ground the room, and a quartz counter in a warm grey or bone. It reads calm, it hides use, and nobody has to compromise.
Where the building wins the argument
A kitchen sits on a wet stack that runs the full height of the building. Moving a sink more than about 1.2 m from the existing trap means either a long, shallow-fall waste line under the counter — which blocks and smells within two years — or a floor build-up the society will not approve. Moving a gas point needs the distributor's approval and, in most Mumbai societies, a written NOC. We have never seen a kitchen relocated wall-to-wall in an occupied building for vaastu reasons and thought it was money well spent.
We will orient your hob, move your sink within the room and load your storage to the south-west. We will not chase a plumbing stack through four floors to satisfy a corner.

A worked example: 2BHK in a 1990s Andheri building
Galley kitchen, 7 ft 2 in by 9 ft 6 in, single window on the west wall, stack on the north wall. Classical placement was impossible — the room simply is not in the south-east. What we changed: hob moved from the window wall to the south-east end of the long counter with the cook facing east into the room; sink kept on the north run within 700 mm of the existing trap; tall unit with fridge housing and pantry built along the south-west; the north-east end left as an open 450 mm counter return with a low shelf and the water purifier. Total joinery 96 sq ft at ₹1,780 per sq ft, plus ₹34,000 for the gas point relocation and re-plumbing. The client's consultant signed it off, and the kitchen works better than the one it replaced — the landing counter went from 380 mm to 900 mm.
That is the honest shape of most vaastu kitchen projects in Mumbai: the room is where it is, and the work happens inside it.

Frequently asked questions
Can a kitchen in the north-east be corrected without moving it?+
Not relocated, no — but it can be adjusted. The usual approach is to place the hob at the south-east end of whatever counter exists, orient the cook to the east, keep heavy tall units to the south and west, and leave the north-east end of the room low and open. Most consultants accept that as a practical accommodation in a flat.
Which direction should you face while cooking as per vaastu?+
East. In a galley or L-shaped kitchen this usually means putting the hob on the counter that lets you stand facing the east wall rather than the window. It is achievable in around seven of ten Mumbai kitchens without moving the gas point more than a metre.
How much does it cost to move a hob and gas point in Mumbai?+
Budget ₹18,000 to ₹45,000 ex-GST in 2026 for relocating a hob within the same kitchen, including the gas line extension, a new cut-out in the counter, chimney duct re-routing and making good. Moving the sink is the expensive half — if it goes beyond about 1.2 m from the trap, the cost jumps because the waste line needs a proper fall.
What colours should be avoided in a vaastu kitchen?+
The traditional guidance avoids heavy black and deep blue as the dominant shutter colour and favours warm tones — terracotta, ochre, warm off-white. That aligns with practical advice too: matte warm neutrals hide turmeric, oil and fingerprints far better than gloss white or black, so the two considerations rarely conflict.
Do you work with the client's own vaastu consultant?+
Regularly. We prefer it, in fact — we ask for their notes before we start the layout rather than after the 3D is approved, because a direction change at layout stage costs nothing and the same change after joinery drawings costs two weeks. Send us the consultant's sheet with your floor plan.
